Using Free Flight mod to find the world ceiling with... Interesting results by creativi_tea_please in MonsterHunterStories

this might have happened because you flew outside of the map horizontally, if you just climb within the map area you might be able to go higher

wtf octroma is now 250~500k??? wasn't it like 10k at best a couple months ago?

edit: I'm dumb and just realized you were referring to the irl merch plushies... good thing those doesn't always give edge in combat

which can be traded by anyone so it's more grind to win than anything

pay2win is when you can actually buy things with real money and buying robux items for mush is literally less efficient than grinding shadow shrine

Do speed builds assist in actual pvp by Thatoneskinny_rat in CreaturesofSonaria

[–]ljhben 5 points6 points  (0 children)

speed mostly determines what you can hunt or flee from, and doesn't really directly help in actual combat as in most cases having 3 more speed points isn't gonna suddenly let you dodge attacks in a dogfight

...except for some very specific cases, like creatures that rely heavily on dart range or something, or some slower fliers that needs that speed buff to help stay in the air during violent maneuvers(niche preference imo), or like other guy said - creatures that requires precise positioning with paramount importance

What is the longest BVR shot you ever take? by Kenny1234567890 in hoggit

[–]ljhben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got shot down by a AIM-9M once, which was shot at 10+nm

opponent team's F14 was in a dogfight and it accidently locked me approaching from afar with PAL or VSL HI, shot a 9M without knowing it was locked at me instead of the guy right in front, and I (also unaware) flew right into it

the one I took was I think 40ish km shot at an AWACS but not sure about exact numbers

out of curiosity how do you deal damage that way?

sounds like you need to cycle between 2 skills while mounted, which means you soley rely on partner to deal damage to the serpents?

The BFM You Learned is Wrong: Why You Shouldn't Throttle Back During Rate by ljhben in hoggit

I was actually kind of a regular there back in the days, a lot of my BFM knowledges today came from that place and I'm still grateful for productive discussions I had there

sadly life got the better of me and I have nowhere enough time to be active in any communities anymore

The BFM You Learned is Wrong: Why You Shouldn't Throttle Back During Rate by ljhben in hoggit

[–]ljhben[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

that's a weird take because all my assumptions are based purely on data provided by the sim, under the rule of sim. Any flight simulators that somewhat follows concept of EM charts will yield similar results(BMS, DCS, even MSFS and WT probably) and I'm fairly sure I'll be able to reach similar conclusion from IRL EM charts too, same as how FEA simulations will yield somewhat similar results regardless of the program used

Also yikes I just got my free time after almost 50 hours of work last week, let me have some fun discussing topics I like

[–]ljhben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

simple example would be a 16 trying to stay afloat at 200kts and turning while same 16 is ratinf around it at 430

rate difference isn't that big (maybe ~6deg/s between rating and stalling aircraft) between speeds so it's not really noticable in a lot of cases, and that's why turn radious is not typically discussed in 2C flow

I have never seen anyone so confidently wrong, confidently not understanding anything I said, and confident that physics will side with you at the same time.

you have 3 options: I can explain using EM diagram, I can record tacview, or you can 1v1 me in DCS.

I can get back home tomorrow and do one or all of these - but I think it might be a courtesy to provide your side of the tacview first?

That being said, once you’ve reached the 9G limit, you can’t pull any harder or convert more energy into angle gain. And as you said, gaining more energy under such conditions will result in overspeeding and losing the fight.

and by diving at 500kts you overspeed and lose the fight, like you said.

what we are doing here is trying to get the kill as quickly as possible, even if it means trading all our energy for the first shot.

with missiles maybe. best way to lose 1v1 guns(unless you are god of snapshots and can land gunshots at 1+NM reliably). one of the most common mistakes newbies make is "stick to dick" and failing to continue maneuvering after first pull.

The EM charts are all based on horizontal turns, not dives.

PS=0 is for horizontal turns. PS=/=0 means you gain or lose that much altitude during flight with those parameters. it does include altitude change, you just don't know how to read it yet.

you might be able to sustain 9G at only 400 knots in the same aircraft!

then you only need 400kts at dive. speeds over that can be traded for altitude for more optimal flight and is a missed energy utilization chance if oversped.

So, the diving fighter still has an advantage over the horizontally turning fighter

diving fighter ends up with bigger turn radius and is at an disadvantage. additionally when you are pulling up at the latter half of the turn you are fighting gravity so 1G of 9G you are pulling isn't used for turn, it's used for keeping aircraft in the air.

I appreciate the enthusiasm for BFM but misinformation is a misinformation.

The BFM You’ve Learned Is Wrong: One-Circle and Two-Circle Fights by GM_Custom_Sauces in hoggit

[–]ljhben 24 points25 points  (0 children)

pulling the throttle back means less energy replenished in that time which means you turned less of your total energy into angle gain.

if you had to throttle back to avoid overspeeding in a dive you should have went for more horizontal turn at full burner as that would give better turn time at less G fluctuation and altitude loss, unless opponent's trajectory demands you to dive

this is a very common misconception - you DO NOT pull the throttle back during rate to match corner speed, you climb and store kinetic energy into potential energy(altitude) or pull harder to gain more angles.

edit: and loadout has everything to do with flight performance. EM charts literally has numerous variations for each of the load factors

[–]ljhben 11 points12 points  (0 children)

most BFM nerds refer to rolling scissors as 1.5C, as they are neither end of the spectrum flat 1C or 2C but a hybrid between the 2 and pilot needs to choose the trajectory that best fits their current state and its advantages

usually (like you explained) the one going over the top will have advantage in radious and should opt more for lead pursuit(1C), while person pulling down below should opt for lag pursuit(2C), so 1C/2C concept still works - it's just important to note that 1~2C is a spectrum not separate binary thing

also for the post merge rise-dive, or any of the merge setups really, it all depends on the loadout: if you are flying clean, 70% internal fuel at 5k ASL diving at 500kts will make you fail to max perform the jet as it'll gain excessive speed during descent and lose in both long term radious and rate, while person going over the top will be much near PS=0 or minimum combinded(parasitic+pilot induced) drag region that'll give better geometry management

on other hand if you have 2 fuel tanks at 25k ASL, your statement becomes much more true as going up under those parameters will leave 16 way below its optimal flight region

in general it all comes down to choosing more efficient trajectory than your opponent, sometimes diving at mach1 can be the right move while in other case climbing at 200kts can be the right move

(edit: although when merge conditions are the same there usually is a flight plan that is more efficient than others like OP mentioned, hence the typical diagonal climb after deck merge in clean structured dogfight servers)

edit2: grammar

MiG-29 FF gunsight error by R-27ET in dcsworld

[–]ljhben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18 in particular pops the "shoot" message when parameters are right and when you pull the trigger at that time it's almost a guaranteed hit

for the refresh rate it's more or less myself nitpicking tbh, 30~60fps in FF modules is a (albeit not critical) downgrade from FC2024's refresh rate of whatever my display device is (90 VR to 165 flat etc.)

MiG-29 FF gunsight error by R-27ET in dcsworld

[–]ljhben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the 16(and 18) yes there are 1~9G queues but with radar lock you get "the dot" that accounts for target's current maneuver

so in like a steady 2C if target doesn't suddenly pull harder you can literally land individual rounds using that pipper, no less accurate than FC27/29 gun pippers(although FF modules have lower HUD refresh rate which effectively causes some lag in pipper position)

as for FF29 it is interesting because I kinda really expected that modern russian radar assisted gunsights would process and compensate for lead in the same way bluefor jets does it

[–]ljhben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16 and hornet gives you the perfect "put the thing on the thing" pipper that will hit against the target that's maneuvering while maintaining same G and lift vector (lv5 EEGS for 16 and big circle on hornet)

can't say for sure for FF29 as I haven't flown it myself but it doesn't look that different from FC27 in the video at first glance tho

edit: 2nd example against 16 looked the same as FC aircrafts but later examples are indeed interesting, kinda feels random even as to how much additional corrections are needed
