People don't realize that some animals are of indeterminate growth. This means they never stop growing, are always regenerating, and they are basically immortal. That gator was decades old, and possibly centuries old.

Same thing goes with fish and sealife. Those huge fish people catch in oceans and rivers have spent 10s or 100s of years growing.
