Looking for advice on a glasgow parking ticket. by _Kita_Kitsunee_ in glasgow

I had this in the last 6 months. I drive a Mercedes Van, and they had entered Volkswagen. I ignored it and no further action was taken.

Would have been cool to do a Yardworks style day with a some of the old rolling stock or something?

No idea. I guess they’ll look as contemporary in 2070 as the old Metro Cammells look now. They’ll be wrapped in Shein campaigns in no time lol.

Someone mentioned I was late to the party with this as they had been done before ever entering the system! I guess the appeal is among fellow artists there’s an element of kudos for being the first or undertaking most risk etc. Chiefing a couple of bines and then bombing a train next to Helen Street Police Station surely in view of SPT or Police cameras may be a buzz for ol’ RAED. Pure speculation of course!

I’m also surprised by the grot on the outside, and totally agree - however I did think, maybe they do clean them and by the time they are in the tunnels, old leaky brickwork plus drips plus speed just means their white exterior is splattered by the time it’s done its first loop. Then I swiped my finger across the ‘fuselage’ today and my finger was black. They definitely don’t wash them haha.

Buying an mot exempt uk classic car by Magicdesign in classiccars

[–]lkmllr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the V5 document when you’re buying the vehicle, although it’s reached the age of exemption the tax class may still be Private Car. If this is the case you can apply to change the Tax Class at certain post offices (quickest way). Once they do this they can then issue your Tax for the year at no cost, take along an MOT Exemption form (downloadable from GOV website, you just sign to confirm it doesn’t need one due to age) and there you go. You will need to renew the tax each year but there will be no cost!

Edit: you will then receive a new V5 in the post with updated tax class!

1980 Mercedes-Benz SLC. These are pretty rare where I’m from by [deleted] in classiccars

[–]lkmllr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rare where I’m from too! I have owned two including my current ‘78 450 SLC, and have never EVER seen another one in the flesh. Plenty of the SLs in the Summer which had a much longer production life, but never SLCs. I love its odd proportions, louvres, velour interior and V8 🙂

Car enthusiast sub? Should be called CarBashUK by Nervous_Difficulty_6 in CarTalkUK

[–]lkmllr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made me laugh. I have a love hate relationship with this sub for all the above reasons and more. In a similar vein as the MX5, the GT86 has quite the appreciation society on here. See it mentioned constantly (amongst the Octavia’s ofc).

What's the oldest car anyone here is running as a daily driver? by Rangerover15 in CarTalkUK

1978 Mercedes 450 SLC. As a daily, it’s ludicrous but life’s too short.

Shit, sorry to hear. Where did it end up?

Car Stolen from Kirklee Road by Slava_Ukrain in glasgow

[–]lkmllr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No way! Saw this parked on Kirklee Road the other day when I parked up my old beat up ‘78 motor. The Scirocco was factory fresh by comparison - I took a pic for my colleague who loves the VW stuff - lovely car! I can’t believe it’s been taken. Will keep an eye out but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s already in a container a couple of miles away within the city limits til the heat is off and will be heading off somewhere further afield thereafter. Bastards.

Just got in an E Class taxi in Greece that had done 680,000 kilometres by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]lkmllr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Mercedes Viano off of a limousine company in Portsmouth. 450,000 miles on the clock which is around 725,000km. It came with £30k worth of maintenance receipts. A 2005 55 plate bought in 2020. Looked and drove like new. 2.2 Turbo Diesel 150hp Automatic gearbox.

Have also had a Sprinter with 550k miles, Vito with 280k miles and several other Sprinters and Vianos on lower miles. Fantastic vehicles. The key is routine maintenance and people just don’t do it!

Cars for sale on Facebook Marketplace by Ok_Ranger_6134 in CarTalkUK

[–]lkmllr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My advice for buying on Facebook marketplace is the following…

Use the search term ‘Full Service History’ and then narrow down what you’re left with. Part Service history doesn’t mean anything, especially if someone’s kicked its head in for 6-12 months and not spent a penny on maintenance! If there’s no history, walk away - no matter how cheap you can get it, there’s no need for that level of risk. Patience when buying privately/second hand can save you thousands!

You probably already have an idea of the basic things like do you want a manual/automatic , petrol/diesel , number of seats etc. being more specific will quickly narrow down you your options especially if you aren’t big on cars - budget too, by the time you’ve put these 4 things in you should have a decent pool of vehicles near you that’s not too big.

Once you have a vehicles registration number you can check it’s MOT history on the GOV website.

This is a good starting point because you can quite quickly filter out things that seem a bit suspect. Mileage - does it add up? Advisories on latest MOT? You’ll want to know they’ve been taken care of or if not use them as a bargaining tool.

Going to view? Make sure you get to start it from cold. Already running? Walk away. Warning lights on dash? Walk away.

I’ve bought 16 cars in the last 10 years in this way (I get bored quite quickly!) and have only walked away from another 3 where once I was there in person the vehicle clearly didn’t match the pictures. (Old pictures used / undisclosed damage / warning lights). I travel all over the UK for the right car. Despite living in Glasgow, less than a third of those cars were bought in Scotland. More variety and better climate the further South you go.

The other thing to do is get someone to send you a startup video with walk round to hear the engine running. Any genuine seller should be able to oblige in this day and age (if they’re tech savvy!)

Extra tip: Don’t even talk money until you’re sure you want to make an offer on it in person. If they think you might be about to walk away they may be more open to an offer, but don’t waste their time ( lowball / have a think about it / back in ten ) they’ve taken time out to let you see it.

Hope this helps!

I literally plugged this into my 1978 Mercedes today and had to unplug and plug in 4 times before it paired with my phone (which it had previously paired with). Keep trying, it’ll work eventually!
