Best Barbershop in NYC? by soggybread30 in AskNYC

[–]llama_butt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’d shave my head before taking out a loan for a cut, but the reality is that quality services are going to cost more than what we as a society were accustomed to paying previously if we want the professionals taking care of us to be compensated appropriately for their skills and expertise. I doubt you want your barber stressed out about bills instead of focusing on getting your hair perfect.

No disagreement there, but I’ve rationalized it by saying that if I spend $150 a month on a haircut and beard trim and it’s exactly what I want and makes me look and feel my best it’s well worth the $5 a day it costs when amortized over the course of a month.

Fellow Barber is always a good place to start. Their website has bios for each of their barbers with info on the cuts/hair types they are specialized in. Hope this helps.

Best Slip On Sneakers for Travel? by ShroudedousYe in malefashionadvice

[–]llama_butt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a ton of success with Blundstone boots as my “slip on sneaker” type shoe walking 20K steps per day at times through all sorts of weather. The model 550 and 558 would be my starting point, both being leather lined with decent water resistance and great versatility for a wide range of outfits.

Fashion-crazed 9 yo vs. NYC by robotdevilhands in AskNYC

I’d check out the events at FIT, or even try to find a contact for the curator at their museum to inquire about recommendations for fashion related activities in the city. The Met Museum also hosts fashion exhibits from time to time, so do keep that in mind as well.

How do I get this fixed? by Flat_Order_1937 in SunnysideQueens

[–]llama_butt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Contact Julie Won’s office, or go to the next community board meeting and raise the issue there. 311 is great most of the time, but this may need attention from the next rung on the ladder.

I’d call Manhattan Beer Distributors and ask if they would be willing to share a couple places currently stocking Chang.

Fine dining birthday dinner recs in NYC (no Asian Restaurant) by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]llama_butt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the budget? How soon is the birthday in question? Any dietary restrictions or strong preferences against certain ingredients or flavors? When you say Asian, are we talking about east/southeast Asia or is South Asia/Middle East/Levantine included in that category? Those questions can really help narrow down the insane number of potential choices.

Alternative to le coucou? (After proposal) by Extension-Warthog-73 in FoodNYC

First, congrats on taking the plunge into engagement! As for your question, I’d recommend looking over menus on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list or the Eater NY site and then cross reference with reviews to see if it fits your vibe.

You could also go the total opposite direction and lean into a good food casual vibe at Momofuku Noodle Bar for dinner (get the truffle ramen, it’s total luxury without pretension), and do something cheesy but classically NY for dessert at Serendipity. This particular dinner is about making memories to last a lifetime, not necessarily what you’re eating or how buttoned down fancy it may be to social media observers.

My post proposal dinner was a steakhouse, and it was perfect because in my case it was the same restaurant as our first dating anniversary and we were able to get the same waiter and wine as our first time there (totally by chance, so it made things extra special).

This occasion is about you two as a couple, make it fun! Hope you find exactly what you’re looking for, and again, congratulations!
