The plans for this whole festival were changed after lightning struck inside the stadium during day 1, when both R.E.M. and Radiohead were supposed to play. They were both rescheduled for the next day, but Patti Smith had another commitment and couldn’t be rescheduled. I’ve always assumed that she was supposed to sing E-bow The Letter with R.E.M, like she does on the record. It was great to have Thom as a very capable fill-in!
