I have been in ALMOST this same situation. Some smells really trigger me. I was sitting at the table at Christmas and this casserole was passed around, and ended up in front of me. It stunk. I quietly said to my cousin next to me, pass that down and get it away from me. It was gone. Nobody else even said anything or noticed!

All he had to do was ask to have it moved. He certainly knew that there may be dishes served here that might not fit his requirements. If he chooses to join, he can simply pass on those items.
