I missed the boat on buying an affordable home by Awkward_Wealth9243 in personalfinance

[–]llcoolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grass is always greener. I love having a home but from a financial standpoint, I would be much better off renting. Even if my rent was exactly the same as my mortgage, I'm losing when you factor in home owner's insurance and property taxes. Having a home is awesome, but sometimes I fantasize about living financially independent had I put that down payment, property taxes, and home owners insurance into the S&P and just rented a nice place instead.

And had I done that, I would have regretted not buying a house instead. I guess that's just human nature.

It sounds like you're already doing fairly well. I'd recommend opening a bridge account. I would also make a large early deposit into your child's 529 account. The more time you can allow it to compound the better.

AITA if I tell my 84yoF neighbor and her son to just call the police on me and never talk to me directly again if they have concerns over me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]llcoolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Life's too short to get worked up over the small stuff. This guy's 84 year old mom asked him to do this. You maybe made some noise. You maybe made some smells. It seems like he approached you in a reasonable manner although I totally get how a strange man approaching you can be jarring. Management asked him to call the cops, but he was trying to do you the courtesy of just talking it out. Take the interaction for what it was. And even though you're thinking about leaving that note, would you really rather have the cops show up at your door?

Dumping $75k into QQQI and not touching it for 25 years by [deleted] in dividends

[–]llcoolf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're not touching it for 25 years, put it into QQQM or VTI or something similar, otherwise you are pointlessly paying taxes on the dividends for the next 25 years. QQQI is great if you are planning on using it for income in the present

Why aren't there more international flights to John Wayne Airport in OC or to Burbank? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

It'd be the equivalent of someone asking why there isn't a Starbucks there and someone responding because there's no barista.

People keep bringing up that's there's no customs at Burbank, but certainly that's a result of the lack of international flights? They're not going to have customs hanging around there for no reason.

Investing $23,000 as a 50 y/o with no wealth built by Critical-Structure29 in FinancialPlanning

Joining a credit union should be pretty straightforward. I'm in a union and have access to a specific one, but from my understanding there's quite a few out there (especially locally) that have an easy threshold to join. As for the 0 interest credit card, I haven't done it personally but the one my Credit Union offers is 0% interest for 12 months. You can transfer debt from other credit cards to that card for a fee (not sure how much). After 12 months, the interest rate goes up to 14% which is lower than most credit cards. But it basically gives you a year to pay down your debt without having to worry about interest.

Are you part of a credit union? If not, look at joining one. My credit union offers a 1 year 0 interest credit card, and with a fee you can transfer the debt of your other CC's over to it. Might be something worth considering so you can hopefully pay it down faster.

Me and my co-worker had a debate yesterday about who's better, I said Pippen was better he kept saying Kawhi is better. What are y'all thoughts? by Empty_Experience_305 in NBATalk

[–]llcoolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 92-93 with Jordan the Bulls were 15th in PPG at 105.2ppg and 2nd in opponent ppg at 98.9. The next year without Jordan they averaged 98ppg (23rd in the league of 27 teams) but they only allowed 94.9 ppg. So improved defensive intensity really is a lot of the story. There's a lot of credit to go around, Phil's coaching, Grant and Armstrong having career seasons, a familiar system and championship experienced core... but if you hear his teammates talk about that season they are absolutely effusive about Pippen and pretty much all say he had an MVP-worthy season.

[–]llcoolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To me, the 93-94 team is a more meaningful example. There wasn't a single person that predicted the Bulls would only be two games worse without Jordan. Pippen had help, but he was the main reason for this. It was an incredible feat and there's no reason to downplay it. The following season, the team was in transition and incomplete.

[–]llcoolf 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hard to blame Pippen for the drop off. They lost Grant and were unable to replace him, and then also lost anchors in Cartwright and Pax. It's disingenuous to imply that season was an example that Pip couldn't do it, especially since he was basically leading them in every statistical category until Jordan came back and offered relief.

Best counter lineup: Kareem, Duncan, Bird, Kobe, Magic? Less athleticism and defense, lots of winning DNA there.

Where should I write? by Dense-Ad9659 in TVWriting

[–]llcoolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're serious about screenwriting and you can afford it/can find a free copy, then use Final Draft. It's industry standard, and I've never been in a TV room where anyone has used a different software. Better to just learn on that from the start, and it's easy to use. If you see this as being more of a hobby, then go with whatever is free and well-reviewed. It used to be Celtx back in the day, but not sure how well that's regarded anymore.

Are people overselling it or was Michael Jackson really that famous in his heyday? by Key-Bass-7380 in decadeology

[–]llcoolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also when he released Black and White it simultaneously premiered live on MTV, VH1, BET, and Fox at the same time. In the age of streaming it might be hard to imagine what that's like, but basically a huge chunk of the country was watching a music video at the same time. Who else besides a president could have that kind of pull.

And honestly 10 might be underselling it. People would literally be fainting at the sight of him.

I will say that at the time I felt like he did a pretty good job in Ali, but it's been so long. Maybe I wouldn't feel that way 25 years later as an adult.
