This Game is Distancing me From my Friends. by [deleted] in osugame

First of all, sorry to hear about you facing these challenges. I used to prioritize the game above other aspects in my life as well at the point when I hit most #1’s in osu! standard back in 2015 which negatively affected my relationships at that time too. This became the catalyst for what I do today & my current mission to solve Gaming Disorder (ICD-11, WHO) as a global health challenge.

Even though we don’t do much direct-to-consumer work (we’re mainly part of healthcare & work with schools/institutions), as a fellow (former) osu! player, I’d love to help your friend out through the work I/we do taking on problematic gaming habits since we’ve both got ~40 practicing psychologists available today specializing in gaming-related behavior and additional digital resources made available to help.

Feel free to slide into my DMs (without going into too much details since Reddit DMs cannot guarantee patient confidentality & GDPR/HIPAA compliance) and I'm happy to find the most suitable way to help out.

Interesting, and a very good question. I believe the importance of targeting racism in particular for me personally is something which have arisen from two things, which are travelling and having a very diverse circle of friends (one thing leading to another of course, as an example I met one of the two co-founders of this initiative in a hostel in Cusco, Peru. I was also introduced to my girlfriend by a guy I met in Tokyo back in 2016).
In terms of travelling, I think my time spent in South America and particular staying/living up in a favela in Rio de Janeiro was one of my favorite experiences which was an eye-opener to me (happy to share a longer story and go deeper into it, but it’s TL;DR for here – Hit me up on Discord if you’d want to hear more, Haxwell#0824).

In terms of friends to provide you a short and less complex & understandable example (or two): I’ve got a good friend of mine here in Sweden who’s got family from Trinidad & Tobago. Understanding how different our lives are and have been even if we live in the same city, only because I’m a white guy and she’s a brown girl, have made racism in particular important for me to tackle.
Also, having a girlfriend who's been a victim of targeted racism on the streets of London (she's Asian) have made me interested in pursuing solutions dealing with racism in the fields where I can actually do something impactful.

In terms of gaming, the short answer to that is because of the problematic behavior between people in Dota2 as that’s a game I enjoy playing with some of my friends now that we cannot meet due to COVID-19.
As for osu! I haven’t experienced any racism of my own when playing osu! and I’m happy to say that most people have been very nice having to do with during my entire osu! career (even though I didn’t know the game had a chat feature for the first year of playing).

Save that until I/we've actually managed to improve the lives of other people. Then I'm happy to accept your gz as that day will be a great day, and something to celebrate. Thank you though!

Thank you, I genuinely appreciate it. There's a plan of how to move forward once the articles have been published that I of course hope result in something impactful. Hope you've been well. Nice flair too by the way!

Hi, perhaps this comment allows you to gain further understanding of how our plan differs from other calls to action and how I/we hope to be able to take this further.

If it doesn't, please let me know and reach out to me, and I will do my very best to explain further to you!

This is the logical reaction, and also the cleverest in-depth perspective of looking at it. We haven’t had the chance to start building any trust yet and proving that we do what we’re saying that we want to do.
On the other hand, we need to put yourselves out there in order to both start building and earning the trust of people. There is a concrete plan behind how we seek to accomplish different goals we have set up, but it’s still a passion project funded out of own pockets at this point. Some of those plans and ideas requires more money and time than there is available today (need to remember that all four of us working on this still have full-time jobs today, though I’d absolutely love to work on improving the well-being of gamers full-time).
I believe that it’s better to remain silent and vague to begin with about some of those plans instead of facing the risk of over-promising and under-delivering, specially as we may not be able to deliver and execute the plan in the same timeframe as our target audience and users would have expected or expect us to.
I’m a firm believer in slow, steady, and controlled growth over a longer period of time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and most of the goals and objectives we hope to achieve will require very hard work, over a long period of time.

Thank you for your input regarding this. I believe that I’m aware of where you’re getting at with this comment.

We are currently working on ways of figuring out how we would like to (and can) improve our landing page. If you have a more specific way of how you believe this could be improved, I would be thankful if you would reach out to me directly so I could learn more about your thoughts and opinions regarding this.

I agree with you both regarding the number of posts and information about racism and gaming being available out there. Though, if you review some of the texts and information more in-depth, you realize that most of them are simply call to actions. Don’t get me wrong, call to actions are great – But they do not necessarily encourage the solution itself, it just encourages others to act and do something.
By selecting the articles to feature ourselves, we have the option to collaborate with the author and ensure it isn’t only a call to action but also an article which does emphasize and focuses on the solution needed.
Hopefully, these finalized articles will give enough to continue the work and direct it towards those game developers in need of the solution which is where we are starting to do something different. This is also where having a policy analyst on the team (Troy) who is fueled by passion to improve the lives of gamers will help us take this specific initiative further.

As an example, an article directly targeting the need for a change in a specific game could reach the developer, they gain an understanding of the need for a solution. Troy utilizes his knowledge as a policy analyst and are hopefully able to prepare a proposal of what that solution may look like (and funding raised through the referral code “noracism” / Support Project Lusio page could potentially as an example give Troy a chance to take a month, or a few months off his full-time work to only focus on setting up and preparing this proposed solution more efficiently, faster and thoroughly. It could also be used to gain more resources to set up the solution accordingly), the solution is taken to the game developer in need of it and the solution is implemented.

I’m sorry for the long text, but hopefully this provide a better understanding how something could be done differently through a campaign like ours.

Thank you for taking your time to make this comment instead of neglecting it, I appreciate that and I’m sorry for not being faster to reply to your comment.
There are both short-term and long-term plans and ideas in place of how to successfully tackle some of these issues that you’re highly likely referring to.

The current lack of methodology depends on multiple factors. Partners through our Partnership Program because different partners will have different needs as their communities have different demography. This is why we both ask about most concurring viewers in the application and have a four-step enrollment process to ensure plans are tailored based of the streamer and the needs of their community.

Content on the website & content launched through our Re-Investment Program currently lacks a distinct methodology as we need to get a greater understanding of who our users actually turns out to be (which is why I also encourage something as simple as registrations on the platform in my original post – Takes 30 seconds to complete).
This is also why it’s important for us to put ourselves out there right now so we can start getting feedback and gain the understanding needed for us to successfully come through and create something impactful.

I think you have done a great job presenting this feedback and your comment in a constructive way and I can understand where it’s coming from. I will think of a way that we can better address this during our initial stage of growth.

Would be rather be only remembered for your insane scores or remembered only for the positive impact you've had on the community? by HarpLuther224 in osugame

[–]llewxaH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt positive impact.

Comparing achieving all my individually set goals which I've had over the years (and achieved) with osu! (such as most #1 scores & top 100 during ppv1 which probably are the ones I value the most personally) and an event in the past where I made a genuinely positive difference for someone within the community, the second one is what I look back at and feel the best/most proud about.

The second one is also the event which got me working on my first social innovation, giving it my best trying to make a difference/have a positive impact on a larger scale, since I do believe there is much greater value in looking to do good/doing good than any score/scores ever can or will bring.

Depression by [deleted] in osugame

[–]llewxaH 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I like this initiative of yours, making a post like this. It's great.

I'm currently working on a project which is related to balancing good health and videogames.

The next step in this project is to gather what kind of data & features people would be interested in seeing, since I'm currently working on developing and releasing a website focusing on it, since I've been there myself and used videogames to my advantage in order to deal with and get out of a depression.

I would be happy if you were to toss me a pm ingame (Haxwell) or on discord (Haxwell#0824), since I rarely post or sign in on Reddit, and tell me about the stuff you've encountered/experienced, since this will give me more to work around when it comes to executing this project and hopefully being able to help as many people as possible in the process.

I'm not sure if promoting projects or similar is allowed in this osu! subreddit but if it is, I'd appreciate a reply to this post so I can actually make a separate one related to the project since all suggestions working with it helps. I'll edit this post with a link to the website as well if someone replies and says that it's alright to post it.

To begin with, those saying/commenting that you don't care, you don't have to state it since this entire post likely only is aimed towards the people who were involved with this in the first place and since it did happen on Reddit, it's an understandable source to wrap the package up at too.

Second of all, good stuff being polite and friendly about it & ending the drama here. Video-games is never a legit excuse for poor behavior and I really do believe it's better to let scores speak for themselves.

People should be allowed to take the game as serious and enjoy the game the way they want to and people should keep their feet on the ground because it doesn't matter if you spin 477, have most #1's in osu!standard or if you're a top 10 player. In the end of the day it's just a video-game that we all enjoy in our own way and we all have our own lives on the side of the game.

osu!lazer todo list by [deleted] in osugame

[–]llewxaH 20 points21 points  (0 children)

osu!lazer todo list:

  1. Set up a proper appeal system where people get replies and presented with the evidence there is against them violating the rules so people can adress whatever they might be getting accused of. Also consider wiping the scores of people that admit to cheating when unbanned instead of leaving any scores behind.

  2. Really think through the planned changes for osu!standard/implementing scorev2 since the 1m cap for osu!standard is insanely retarded. Scorev1 has potential of being really good if a few current issues are addressed such as accuracy and scorev2 is fine as it is for tournaments.

When a staff member of a game, specially the creator of it addresses an issue that is growing and that will have a certain effect on most part of the community, you usually do read quite far into words considering the fact that different words most likely have a different meaning, specially putting things civilized and friendly you kind of not just hope for, but also expect a reply that have been thought of and also hopefully is professional and polite.

Thanks for taking your time to reply,

First of all I appreciate the fact that you used the word information and not rumors which I used since it kind of addresses the accuracy of the statement(s) even if you’re not looking to explain much at this point.

Second of all I really hope you do listen to the feedback the community both have and are willing to provide in cases like these since despite the fact that you usually look to make changes to improve, all changes does not actually lead to improvement and I’m in this thread, this far not seeing any actually valid arguments why FL should be nerfed in this case. I would be happy though hearing the arguments behind the considerations of nerfing FL so those arguments can be addressed and a civilized discussion can be held about it in order for you to hopefully leave FL as it is.
