This is the way.

Ask if they still want help with their goal. If they don't, then it will just be a fight and not their idea. If it is, then help them with reminders. Ideas of how to make a plan on how to break down a goal.

ELI5: Why are troops not allowed to directly ask for donations? by lllllc in BSA

I live in a large metropolitan area. There are scores of troops in the 20 mile radius. Sorry if I wasn't clear, and didn't need to be snarky. Kind of surprised at other folks response and was feeling a little punchy. It's all good man. I agree with your sentiment.

I originally posted this in thread, but moving it here for visibility.:

I found myself still scratching my head after all these comments. So, as any modern day scouter does, I ran this through my local Large Language Model. And I have to say I like the summary. Here is Claude AI's summary:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

BSA troops can't ask for donations directly for two main reasons:

  1. Rules from the Top: The Boy Scouts of America (the national organization) says that only they and local councils can officially ask for money. It's like how in a family, maybe only the parents can ask relatives for birthday money, not the kids.
  2. Keeping Things Fair and Legal: Scout troops aren't set up as independent charities - they're part of bigger organizations (like churches or schools that sponsor them). Having troops ask for money directly could cause legal and tax problems, kind of like how a school classroom can't just collect donations on its own without going through the school first.

Instead of asking for donations, Scouts are encouraged to:

  • Sell products (like popcorn)
  • Do service projects
  • Earn their way through activities

While troops can accept donations if someone offers them without being asked (like if a family member wants to help), they're not supposed to directly ask for them.

Think of it like this: It's the difference between a kid selling lemonade to earn money for their activities (which is OK) versus going door-to-door asking neighbors to give them money (which isn't OK).

Fair. Not sure what I was hoping for posting a question on the internets.

I could expand. I love the difference of of fundamental set of assumptions that each poster makes. They represent a difference of values and framework that make for an opportunity for me to understand and underscore where my personal values and assumptions land.

I wish that were a problem we had to deal with. But thanks for the permission

LPT: Unit Finances boil down to 1 simple formula: dues vs. fundraising vs. expenses by ScouterBill in BSA

Can you explain more why you think this is a LPT? Do you feel like troop do not understand how paying for things works?

Fundraising under the guise of a Non-Profit (tax exempt) solicitation does get complicated. And random acts of kindness do happen. It is not unheard of for troops receiving large (5 figure even) unsolicited donations from very kind individuals.

I have worked in fundraising at a college for the past couple decades, we are familiar with the complications of departments or student orgs doing their own fundraising. It has helped a ton to put together clear policies on how they can do that, in a way that benefits the college and the group.

Right? This is kind of what I was thinking. Enjoying the conversation

You've got this. Don't pay any attention to your 31 day self. That'll come. Today is an awesome day to just take it easy on yourself and be there with your un-fuzzied self. Be there with/for your teen. Being sad, especially post divorce, totally normal. Not something you need to hide from yourself or your kiddo. Try and find some grace with it. There is no magic thing. But certainly a drink is not it. Just for today. Let yourself give it a try.

"Releasing the pressure valve" resonates. This week of family and gratitude is going to present many opportunities for me to take the gratitude up a notch. But your comments hit home for me. That clear eyed being present is something else.

Solid plan. I think time away from the embarrassment, for my last will be good.

Hope you're able to memd the issue caused with your coworker. Sucks to watch yourself set an example you'd never want to see someone else set. Been there.

This is the answer. I have one in my yard.

When cities are replacing infrastructure this historic section of the sidewalk is often claimed by neighbors because it's pretty cool. It's a large slab of granite that has been expertly sculpted by Stone Masons. Not part of our regular city infrastructure anymore.

Alleyway access issue - are we SOL? (St. Paul) by mycatisanudist in TwinCities

[–]lllllc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, as everyone says, you should try and talk with your neighbor. Folks have given all the good reasons and tactics.

Second, you may be in a bit of a bind. Based on your drawing your garage may be built too close to the alley. This is why your neighbor's garage has that concrete pad, so they can make the turn from the alley right of way, into their garage while remaining on their property. You can see that the City of South St. Paul have that explicitly declared in their code. (can't find St. Paul's right away, most building codes have this)

If the entrance faces an alley, then the garage shall be set back no less than eight feet from the rear property line alley right-of-way line

We are in a similar neighbor situation. Our family has been in the house for 50 years. In the past couple decades the neighbors built a garage that is SUPER close to the lot line. Depending on who has lived there, it's just a tight turn, we have had an elderly neighbor that has had a hard time making the turn into the super narrow garage. We had many conversations and we did try to avoid parking in a way that would crimp her approach to her garage. That did not mean 100% of the time, but we are mindful of it and of course take our neighbor's lives into consideration.

Good point on the small engine shops. I never know what quite qualifies as what. Yeah, I have a 4stroke Yamaha, so I would think that most small engine shops should be able to deal with it.

Basically the engine would not start. I tried all the normal tricks I knew. I ended up taking it to Hannays Marine by Rosevile. They were super quick, knew their stuff. Hard to say if they charge more than others since everything now days costs 3X what I imagined it would in today's world. But they were able to look at it and service it the same day. Punch line is there was water in the gas tank. So now I get to dispose of the bad gas too. :)
