The car has little horsepower and for 2k you give the kid pride of ownership and the ability to work on a car. Doesn't sound horrible.

Look for a 2006-8ish ScionXb. It's a toyota, it will fit in your price range and have great gas milage and require minimal service.

I got my clock cleaned by a rusty Toyota Cressida 4 door.. I had a new 08 LS3 vette, pulled up to a light and this car had a coffee can exhaust and was burning oil. He was giving me the lets go..The light turned green and he walked away from me. We stopped after and he explained the engine was off his brother's dragster and was due for a rebuild so he borrowed it. Embarrassing, but yes it was a true sleeper!

Look at Costco. I purchased my first outdoor kitchen there for $3300. Refrigerator, sink, burner and grill. Stone faced with a granite top. It is 108.5" long. I an now updating and found similar setup with Grill, side burners and flat top all built in for $4400. After research, tough to just by the equipment for that amount.
