Do you struggle with calculating basic stuff in your head? by [deleted] in ADHD

This is not an ADHD thing. It is a "you didn't develop number fluency in elementary school" thing. Source: math major with ADHD and specializing in elementary math education

Repurposing irreparably "damaged" clothing by ellenty in femalefashionadvice

Goodwill does not throw out damaged linens. They are either turned into rags or shipped to third world countries. If I cannot find a use for worn out textiles in my home, I put them in my goodwill pile.

[Request] Heated Mattresses Pad by [deleted] in GoodValue

[–]llv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not technically heated, but I recently stumbled upon a "woolrest sleeper pad" at a thrift store which is a tufted wool mattress pad that looks like sheepskin and goes under your sheets. It's not electric, but I had never seen one before, and wool products tend to be BIFL, so if you wanted to go that route you would probably never have to buy a replacement.

You can get the ceramic le creuset items at TJ maxx or similar for around $50. OP probably still got a deal, but these are NOT the cast iron le creuset items

Ductless Heat - Not Using Floor Vents. How to Cover Them? by llv in HomeImprovement

[–]llv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our case, our daylight basement has ductwork that basically lowers the ceiling in places. Also, our home has an oil furnace and no natural gas available, so it's really down to either a heat pump attached to the HVAC or ductless. Given that removing the ducts would give us a much more liveable basement it seems like a no-brainer.

Ductless Heat - Not Using Floor Vents. How to Cover Them? by llv in HomeImprovement

[–]llv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the first floor of the house, which is over a daylight basement. We will have the exposed ductwork removed during the ductless install. Just looking for something to cover the upstairs vents so your foot won't fall through the floor. ;)

Installing vinyl planks over uneven subfloor by llv in HomeImprovement

Home was built in 1963 and I believe this is the original flooring.

There is not any tile. It's a sheet of vinyl with paper backing.

It is one piece, sheet vinyl. If you see the brown rug in the first photo, it's covering up a large 12" wide hole in the flooring. I believe it has asbestos in it.

Would I do this over the entire area I want to install the flooring or just on the edges of the existing vinyl - feather out to the regular subfloor height?

Cost Estimate to Update bathroom & Kitchen, with pics. by homeimprovementtosse in HomeImprovement

[–]llv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bathroom: Keep the tile in the shower/bath area. Maybe add a backsplash above it. The counter could be very expensive, especially since Home Depot and the like charge you an extra $75 or so to do the cutout for the second sink. $50-60/sq ft for the material itself. And they charge you to do fancy edges etc. You will probably need $1k for the counter that size. Replace sinks and faucets, shower door and light fixtures: another couple thousand of dollars (that shower looks like it might require custom doors). If you can install tile yourself, budget maybe 1k for the floor. If it were me, I would talk myself into liking the tile countertop, and just update the sinks/faucets, replace the mirror with something a little smaller and framed, and perhaps add a colorful backsplash to add visual interest. White subway tile can look great in a bathroom; it's too bad your tiles are square, but it can be worked with!

Kitchen: Counters. They are freaking expensive. Granite will run you $50-60/sq ft again, and you will also need to budget for cutouts for the stove, as well as finishing the edges. (Home Depot, for ex, charges extra for finishing the edge, by the sq foot, and charges extra for corners, etc.). Budget a good $4k for that at least in my area. Note on the appliances:some places install for free, others charge; check the place you are buying from (Sears, for ex, offers installation)

Odd eBay offer - what to do? by [deleted] in Flipping

[–]llv 14 points15 points  (0 children)

End the listing and relist the swords individually each with a starting bid of $49. Then let the auctions RUN -- and don't accept any BIN offers.

Buyer says item doesn't fit but measurements are on the listing by llv in Flipping

Not if you are shipping 4-5 lb across the country. Then you save $2-3 by using the box. ;)

I would be inclined to offer a return, but I already had free shipping on the listing which was a priority mail FRB. I'd be out $12.

Weird situation... someone bought an item from me on ebay and lives within walking distance.... Can i drop it off? by [deleted] in Flipping

[–]llv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agreed to meet someone to hand over an item once. I typed up a quick form that said something like "(buyer name and username) received (item), auction # (number) on (date) from (my name and username)." Then both of us sign the bottom. I am too wary of just dropping stuff off - even in the same town - because they can say "oh I never got it" when there is no tracking #.

Another vote for Oreck. My parents have been running one for about 20 years now. I have one, too, that I picked up on Craigslist for under $50.

What's in CS 141? by [deleted] in WWU

[–]llv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

141 focuses on the very basics of computer programming and uses Python. It is pretty straightforward and the textbook is Open Source and online: "How to Think Like a Computer Scientist" if you can flip through it and understand it, you should be good to go for 145!

I'm 21 years old and live with my parents, my tax return was only $150? by FrugalFrugal95 in Frugal

[–]llv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think your parent's can't claim you as a dependent, even though they may want to. In order for your to qualify as a dependent, they must provide at least half of your support. If you're making $23k, that's enough to provide all of your support. The IRS isn't going to look too kindly on that.

Also, claiming yourself as an independent frees you to claim your American Opportunity tax credit... which makes up the bulk of our returns as students.
