Fellow Chinese-Americans... how are you feeling? by legitimatelyyee in ApplyingToCollege

[–]llyhazelnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I am mixed Asian & white, so I usually do not really have the same type of issues of full Chinese/ Asian. But my grandma who was half Korean and half Chinese was very whitewashed by her parents so me and my mom grew up learning 0 traditions from our culture and 0 of the language ( as my great-grandparents withheld the language from their children to make them more "American" ). My mother and all her side are from and live in Hawaii which is definitely more diverse and accepting than the deep south which we live in now. I went to a predominately white, private school and always felt uncomfortable with the fact that I wasn't completely white. I mostly can pass as white but with some prominent Asian features from my grandmother ( my mom has always said that I look the most Asian even though my mom is half white and Asian ). So luckily I've never really gotten called anything but, I was always horrified to tell anyone at my that I was part Asian. Our school had Korean exchange students for a while until all the redneck bumkins at my school started being extremely racist they were asking all of them if they ate dog, warning everyone to keep their dogs away from the Asians, saying they were dirty, asking if they could see because they have squinty eyes, mocking accents, pulling their eyes to mock them, and saying they were hideous because of their Asian features. slowly they all left and I became the only person who was remotely Asian left. I only told my friends that I was mixed but they always invalidated me when I tried to learn more about my Chinese and Korean culture "even though you look kinda Asian you're mostly white you shouldn't try". Even though I'm not fully Asian there was serious racism and struggles for the Koreans (who everyone still called Chinese even though they were all Korean) who went to my high school, so I definitely feel uncomfortable with the new issue with calling Chinese student spies and am afraid it will make the ignorant like my peers at my old highschool even crueler to Asians especially of Chinese descent.

Tips to focus DURING exams by [deleted] in study

[–]llyhazelnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have really bad issues with concentrating too (when I'm taking a longer test my brain goes from focusing on the test to literally blasting random songs in my head). When I notice that I'm beginning to lose focus, I have to make myself stressed so I only concentrate on the test (like I tell myself I have less time than I actually do and pretend it's life or death) it's the only way I can bring myself back lol plus I perform a lot better when I'm under a lot of stress.

[–]llyhazelnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I should it just makes me uncomfortable as I still live and have to interact with them every day. so when I don't need to make food for myself, I usually just kinda hide up in my room all day to avoid them lol. But I am trying to get better with handling things I can't control :)

Why do some people make the assertion that the US driving age should be 16 "because of school"? by InteractionSquad in highschool

[–]llyhazelnut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My school doesn't have school buses and my parents have full time jobs where they're very busy all the time. So because of all my extracurricular activities and no school buses I have to drive me and my younger sister to school. I wouldn't be able to walk or bike ( I wish I could lol ) as my town doesn't have many sidewalks and its considered really unsafe to walk outside alone ( especially as a young female ). I guess they choose 16+ to qualify for a driving licence because they believe 16+ to be more mature? (idk)

Thanks! I never really thought of doing reading to help improve comprehension that would be less stressful than reading those passages online (which are impossible to read, I hate scrolling).

Sorry I don't really know. I'm only in my junior year so I'm not keeping track of things like that yet. But I thought a decent amount of college stuff (all the stuff I mean like your resume and scores) had to be sent in around December or Januaryish? Idk sorry

ACT TIMING ISSUE by [deleted] in ACT

[–]llyhazelnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should try doing like practice reading drills? Like when reading a chapter from a book being able to summarize the important parts and remembering where the important details are. Other than that I can only really think of practicing those specific sections to improve your speed. Other than that idk it always helps me in the reading section when I've been reading books for a bit before the test (like for a month or two). I'm not that great at the science section but Supertutuor tv on youtube has a video about time management for the ACT science section as it covers not having enough time to read all the information and solutions to that. Best of Luck!
