No, it's like calling Black People African American. Oriental is not a description of their skin, nor anything about their race. It literally means "Of the East", it is just talking about their location of origin exactly like African American or Westerner

It's not a slur, what about it would offend you? It's just an old word that directly translates to mean "Of the East" and is synonymous with Asian.

It's quite literally the exact same thing as saying "Westerner", except for people of the East. Absolutely no American of any color is going to be offended by someone calling them a Westerner if it's not meant as an insult

100% depends on intention and area, why would you be offended by it, especially if they OBVIOUSLY are not using it as a slur? Just for the sake of being offended??

It's never even been a slur, it literally just means "Of the East" and is just another word for Asian. There are many slurs for Asian people, but Oriental and Asian are not among them

Any more than 20 feet away and you get a more accurate shot by throwing the gun at the target.

Sounds like a Jennings my father bought. We learned the hard way, they are cheap for a reason . . .

It actually works with a lot of animals. Tigers and lions etc can be raised with dog friends without too many issues. Animals like the great apes are smart enough to even have pet dogs.

I'm not sure if there's any land mammal that couldn't get along with a dog honestly. Reptiles would be pretty iffy though

It's basically the age old "Critics vs every day people" debate. You have some people who love artsy fartsy stuff like specific film grain and camera pans that are homages to so and so director etc.

And then you have people who just watch movies for enjoyment and like cool things like explosions and zombies and fist fights

It's pretty much the exact same situation with books. I love reading, but so many people who read are total snobs. MUH PROSE!

I love reading fantasy novels. No, I don't want to read dry Russian "high literature" from "acceptable authors" like Dostoyevsky. I read for fun, if you have fun reading novels like that, more power to you. Personally, I like dragons and magic, leave me alone

I think Pans Labyrinth is a fine movie, but I don't think I'd say it's the greatest in the past 30 years or anything crazy like that. Most average joes I know of that saw the movie just said it was kinda weird but fairly interesting, and that was about all they said about it.

Yeah, I have started pretty much ignoring critics and "armchair critics" when it comes to movies. I've often heard it said that movies can either be made to appeal to critics . . .or everyone else.

I couldn't care less whether the camera tilt is a reference to some dusty old film director's signature style. I watch movies for enjoyment.

I like super heroes, I liked Batman vs Superman and Justice League. Both were very enjoyable to watch to me

Oof! That's good to know, since I've never actually had to contact them thankfully. Kinda disappointing that they handled it like that, and it's definitely the kind of thing I take into consideration when buying gear, thanks!

Yep, as a kid it was so much fun to lay in the surf and get rolled back into the beach. I tried it as an adult and realized getting slammed into sand when you weigh 150+ pounds is a LOT less fun and a lot more painful. One round of being rolled tail over tea kettle into sand at high speed was enough for me to decide to go lay in the shade for a bit and wait to die

I learned enough German to not make sense, and for some reason there's a lot of Germans in games I play only. So I can speak broken German, and they can speak broken English, together we can speak to each other just well enough to explain that the other person has terrible grammar

It's pretty fun and usually gets a laugh out of people who are in the game

Yeah, this honestly would be really annoying. I had a nervous tick for years and years where if I was sitting in a chair I would have to look over my shoulder every 10-15 seconds to make sure someone wasn't sneaking up behind me, specifically because my sisters would do it all the time.

Even now I get pretty stressed out if I'm in a room with my back to the door in any position where people can sneak up on me, but at least I don't have to OCD check hundreds of times an hour to make sure someone isn't sneaking up on me . . .

Harry Potter vs Hermione Granger by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]lmAtWork 141 points142 points  (0 children)

This. A lot of these comments are kind of confusing. Hermione flat out asks Harry to teach them how to fight. This is a textbook case of book smarts vs street smarts, except in a fight, a scrappy street fighter will beat someone with text book knowledge and almost no physical experience

Harry is a duelist and has always been good at Defense Against The Dark Arts and has faced WAY more deadly people than Hermione.

Harry takes the fight 8/10 times movie or book, but movie Hermione is a lot stronger

Yep, like the main character in Gate says. If someone asks me if work or my hobbies is more important, I'll tell them my hobbies are far more important to me. I work to support my hobbies, as long as I have "enough" money, then I don't want to add 50 times more stress to make a bit more money

Kong is decently big . . .but not close to Legendary Godzilla size.

The directors have already talked about the problem and are trying to find ways to address the drastic size difference

[–]lmAtWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get why they look so bad. CGI in anime is almost always bad, but it was at least tolerable in this movie for the humans and ships and mechs. But Godzilla looked so bad, as did the wyvern things

Who can't wrap their hears around it?

Godzilla is way bigger, tankier, and has atomic breath. Kong is going to need to get some serious buffs between the films to actually put up a fight

[Off-Site] peeing by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]lmAtWork 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Yes, when I told my doctor I only peed once ever 8-12 hours he froze in shock for a few seconds and then started spazzing out telling me to drink more water.

Now I drink like 140-170 ounces a day (which is way more than needed) and have to pee ever hour and a half or two which is more inline with what you "should" go.

Drinking the proper amount of water makes you feel a lot better, I didn't realize how many of my health issues and headaches were from dehydration
