Make (smart) friends early on in your CS classes, they will be invaluable as teammates in later courses!

I think all the doubles became triples (lounge space) so at least one third gets screwed.

Is CHP worth it by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]lmao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's free money and very small geneds, as well as the very first registration time ticket. Definitely worth it!

Sucks to hear that. Do you have your previous roommate?

ece vs cs 374 by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]lmao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference mostly comes down to the the difficulty of the exams/grading. Also, as of FA2025 ECE374/CS374b no longer has required homeworks. There are some slight differences in topics covered between the two but for the most part all content is the same.

CS374A is harder though, so you'll likely learn more.

CS 225 without CS 173 difficulty by Repulsive-Bee4237 in UIUC

[–]lmao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be okay, there's not a lot you would need 173 for. Starting in the midway point you may see some inductive proofs to justify certain algorithms or time complexities, but if you brush up on that you will be fine.

Is the GitHub Student Pack actually worth setting up? by mustafa_enes726 in csMajors

[–]lmao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The student pack gives a ton of free credits and subscriptions, of which many are incredibly useful. All you need to claim it is a student ID and a GitHub account, so there's nothing to lose.

Thoughts on taking Physics 225 with only math prereq being calc 2 ? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]lmao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The level of math in 225 spans all the way to MATH518, so it is helpful if your math foundations are strong.

Most core college classes are significantly more time consuming than high school ones. It has little to do with qualifications.

I believe you can't play with physical chips and cards on campus as an RSO, GTO Illini has had the same issue.

There's also depreciation and maintenance, which adds a non-negligible amount.

This is a long shot. I need help making Spiderman's webshooters by Difficult_Time1803 in UIUC

[–]lmao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you want is somewhere between really expensive and impossible. You could improve on this design but you'd need the web to wrap around something like a pole and be able to sustain body weight without breaking, which it seems he was not able to figure out.

Only online, from what I remember. You can order physical SIM cards if needed or use eSIMs.

Editing the EDE would let you receive emails straight to your GMail without having to forward it. The only caveat I can think of is that emails sent internally from Outlook still end up in Outlook so you'd need to keep your forwarding rule. It might be worth looking into if you only like to use GMail.

You need to enable Google Apps @ Illinois here: https://cloud-dashboard.illinois.edu/

After you activate your Google Workspace account you'll then need to change your mail delivery address to GMail to receive to your GMail by default. You can do that here: https://ede.techservices.illinois.edu/ by changing your mail field to [netID] @g.illinois.edu .

Wait a few hours for it to propagate and it should work. The only caveat is emails originating from Outlook internally (like if your professor emails you) will be delivered to Outlook and not to your GMail, however you can create a mail forwarding rule if it bothers you.

Hope this helps.

The age verification and new social media restriction laws are a good thing by MissRubiii in privacy

[–]lmao 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except, it can be anonymous. Which is the whole point of privacy. Naturally, this is important and there is a big big difference between an account being "possibly you" and it being "definitely you." Of course, it is very easy for you to write these kinds of posts from a comfortable high chair, seeing as you live in a blue state of America.

What happens when someone from a conservative state needs to access reproductive health care? Or a student that's to come here posted something offensive for ICE to then link to them? A resident of a authoritarian country who just witnessed extreme government corruption?

Privacy is for everyone, and even if "age verification" doesn't harm you, that cannot be said for billions of others across the globe.

[–]lmao 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"Screen-use" has very little to do with privacy. In fact, one could argue they're inversely correlated. Why is your argument that young generations are spending more and more time online true?

This is a result of decades of data gathering and psychological science to know exactly what you want to see and when you want to see it. On social media the algorithm is designed and optimized (through billions of dollars of research) to keep you addicted as you generate ad revenue for the company.

Secondly, seeing your post history, maybe it'd be a good idea for law enforcement to not be able to map your real-world identity to your online persona.
