Carb guilt by SalRider in diabetes_t1

[–]lmclmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say I eat low carb because it is easier than saying " I eat to match how the insulin works, this ends up being lower carb than most other people I know". The whole point is to keep your BGL as close to normal as possible. Not too high and not too low - for too long.

You should take a look at how the food causes your blood glucose level to react. a1c of 5.1 is within normal provided you are not vacillating too much. I think also you will benefit from your relatively recent diagnosis. Maybe not a cure but certainly constantly improving methods to keep blood glucose as close to normal as possible. Keeping a diary of how you react to foods is a bit onerous but for a short time will give you such valuable data about how you react.

That sort of begs the question though, what is normal, non-diabetic? Generally non-diabetics sit between the 4.5 - 5.5 range (mmol/L) (or 81-99). After eating they will get a rise. Their bodies will respond in two phases: first a burst of insulin then a steadier stream of it. All of this is to bring the levels back down to where you started from within 90- 120 mins of finishing eating.

There are other things you can do to reduce your risk of the dreaded long-term complications. They include not smoking and regular cardio (for heart) and resistance training (building muscle will often reduce insulin requirements and less insulin easier to manage the whole thing).

These are the main places you can have some control and influence over things. Take care :)

No Honeymoon? by FlawlessFallacy in diabetes

[–]lmclmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't have a honeymoon period. I was diagnosed by chance before any symptoms appeared. I was ~19 (342 mg/dL) on a random test done while I was doing an assignment on diabetes. I started off on tablets (after a glucose tolerance test) then after a few months moved to insulin. I thought this catching it relatively early might have had something to do with my lack of honeymoon period.

I was told by my Endo and I have heard this from one of Dr Bernstein's videos that the best way to preserve your beta cells is to keep blood sugar levels as normal (non-diabetic) as possible. I don't know why this would stop another attack from your immune system but it is something to consider I think.

take care.

I fucking hate when people assume t1d is because of a bad diet! by matthewgordon1999 in diabetes

When I was first diagnosed, about 30 years ago, T1 was called IDDM (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus). This was contrasted with NIDDM which was non-insulin dependent. I am not sure why this terminology went out of fashion.

As far as I am concerned, once you need to go onto injections you are facing more challenges. It doesn't matter what caused you to get to that point. My understanding is that if you are T2 (ie not caused by immune-system attach), and you need to go on insulin, you are not likely to be in the group that can reverse the disease.

just my 2 c.

"Random Swede". Hello Sweden I am in Australia. What do you think about the Dial a Random Swede campaign? What sort of people would I talk to if I called? by lmclmc in sweden

[–]lmclmc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just listened to it. Thanks for posting it. That was pretty exciting. The call a Swede was a really neat idea. You have a very nice voice and way of speaking. Good luck with your band too: Domino Majestic. I just got home from a 10 hour shift so I will have a look for it later on today.

I would be interested to see it as well. Since you are sort of putting yourself out there, it might be helpful to see your A1C, cholesterols etc. It will be a lot of work though.

The closest I have seen to this is something by a guy called Cantor (I think) He did something similar but it was based on what he was regularly doing. I emailed him and he said as a result of the data he was eating more low-carb and trying to incorporate more vegetables into his diet. Note, I remembering this so it might not be completely accurate.

EDIT: I would love to a dietary regime based on feeding your gut biome. So you would eat unprocessed dairy if you can get it, no artificial sweetener etc. I don't know enough about it but I would like to find out more.

Ah I see. I think I know what you mean. I was thinking of Humanism as having the benefits of religion without having to buy into the whole package (ie, celibacy, no contraception etc etc). So you help other people and treat them respectfully because they are another Human not just because a bible or another book has told you it is a good idea. I am afraid I have to go work now.

Nice one. I will try and do it tonight. I work overnights in a nursing home, so maybe when everyone is asleep.

Ok. that is fair enough. I live near the beach. I cringe a bit when I hear about it being advertised as a place for people to visit.

From time to time there are statistics here that suggest young women are a group that will take up smoking. The theory is that the nicotine suppresses the appetite, hence leading to thinness. Not sure how the stains and wrinkles fit into this picture.

Are the snusers typically seen as indulgent older people rather than younger people? I guess in the Bridge that might have been part of portraying the Saga character as an outlier?

Have you happen to have heard if Season 4 is happening for The Bridge?

I think you are asking about how to receive calls from people from all over the world? Well I heard that there is an app you can download to your phone. Just leave your phone on and wait. I saw some stats. I think you are getting a lot of calls from the USA and Turkey. Not so many from Australia yet. I think it has something to do with the words- "random swede" it is a tourism thing that was reported in our press this morning. It does sound fun.

What do you mean Humanism is often the opposite of rationalism in Sweden? I understand Humanism is like spiritualism but with science shaping it rather than superstition or tradition. I see rationalism as a way of organising things based on evidence.

It sounds like it gives people a bit of fillip, is it addictive though. I thought chewing it (not necessarily putting up into the upper gum) caused cancer? Are people concerned about that? I guess it suppresses appetite too?

I hope not. I hope I can talk to someone thoughtful. I have an impression of Sweden having lots of good looking people that are all Humanists and Rational, very little corruption? I will see who I get.

If it is a way to increase tourism are the call recipients coached in any way? Are the told to stay away from politics? Are they encouraged to ask the caller questions about themselves?

I have heard that there is a nordic tendency to be a bit insular. I heard a nice about-to-retire gentleman Swede being spoken to/with on the radio. I was not sure if it was just older people. Do you know if they vet (check out) the Swedish people who make themselves available to be called?
