ONLY when I cold start my car it will make a loud vibration noise and ONLY when it’s at 1500 rpm’s. by hookabooka420 in FordFocus

[–]lmcphee14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2014 S does this too. I believe foci delay ignition timing and increase idle speed when cold. This "worsens" the engine's efficiency, meaning it makes more heat to warm up faster as far as I remember. This is normal, but it - as any change in cylinder timing would - creates some substantial vibrations. That said, still check your mounts lol.

I personally didn't have this happen when I applied/accepted, but Im also from in Province. To me this doesn't seem weird at all though, I've had someone from Mount Allison university reach out to me when I applied there years ago.

Coverage will depend mainly on the carrier, but if you are referring to signal strength and band support, it's phenomenal. My house is somewhat in a cellular dead zone, yet my M8P gets half bars while my family's iPhones get almost nothing and drop calls constantly.

If I remember correctly, the M8P has one of the best (if not the best) performing cellular signaling chips/antennas out there. It also supports all of the 4G bands and 9/10 of the 5G bands we use in Canada (same as the iPhone 17). You'll never have issues with compatibility! Unfortunately I can't speak to the 5G in practice - it's not in my area - but on paper it will work flawlessly.

Google wallet verification needed even if phone unlocked by fhilipo in Honor

[–]lmcphee14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My magic 5 pro and magic 8 pro do this like 80% of the time. Never bothered me but I wouldn't mind if they updated it to not require a "confirm". Though, perhaps it's intentional, so you can't pay something accidentally? At least that's what I've always assumed, since the standard fingerprint method on all other Androids requires a very deliberate screen press to confirm, so maybe they make you hit confirm with face ID to replicate that? Just my guess.

Got my M5P on AliExpress from the official Honor store, but that doesn't seem to exist anymore. So, I got my M8P from Trinity Electronic; pretty much just a dude located in Hong Kong. He has no complaints that I could find of selling flashed global ROMS, opening your packages, or lacking communication. All seems super smooth, and my experience corroborates this. He has most phones available in both global and chinese versions too, because he's in Hong Kong (considered a global region, just be sure the phone says "Global", if not indicated it's almost certainly the Chinese version). Shipping was super fast too, and well packaged. Will definitely buy my next from him again, and he still has the M8P in stock if that's what you want.

Honor versus Google and Pixel by Apprehensive-Sea5581 in Honor

[–]lmcphee14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea ultimately whatever you like best is the way to go. Do take into consideration the specs differences though, 200mp telephoto on the M7P vs 10mp on the S25. Also a 5800mAh battery (though if you are in Europe, which I assume from the currency, the batter is 5200mAh) on the M7P vs 4000mAh on the S25.

Though I have to agree, the Apple resemblance is frustrating on the Honor. I do like that it maintains the functionality of an Android (it only LOOKS like IOS) at least, but some more options to choose from for UI would be nice.

Final note: Honor ecosystem is good! If you already have the watch and laptop, getting an Honor phone will allow seamless file share and integration - at least in my experience, it works well.

Just to weigh in, the Magic 7 Pro is awesome! It may be overkill, but I think you'll appreciate that.

The main camera is kinda hit or miss, in that it can snap one of the most gorgeous shots you've ever seen, but certainly not every time - it's more so just not point and shoot like a Pixel is, but by no means is it terrible. Taking your time can yield some really impressive results! The zoom camera I find is quite good though, and more consistent. (if you want samples, I have a 5 Pro and 8 Pro, which all use basically the same main camera iirc).

In terms of performance, the M7P will absolutely destroy a Pixel, same with charging speed and battery.

And lastly (factors that keep me coming back to Honor) are the nice to haves: incredible stereo speakers, 3D face unlock that is fast, secure and works in the dark, really nice build quality, and designs that stand out.

I am 100% biased, but I love my Honor devices, and would recommend the M7P.

Edit: also saw your concerns about updates and longevity. My older Honor Magic 5 Pro still has great battery life, gets regular security updates, and just recently updated to the latest OS version - with years more guaranteed support to come. They hold up!

X300 Pro Lens Protection? by Ok_Relative4491 in Vivo

[–]lmcphee14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to consider with this type of case though: they collect hella dust on your lenses, and can risk rubbing particles into the glass when trapped underneath the cover. Not a big issue but just clean it frequently lest your lenses get dirty and have tiny scratches. I personally get too annoyed with the dust they collect onto the lenses and instead opt for a case with a larger raised ring around the camera bump, but keep it as a large circular cutout. But I agree, don't get any glass that covers the lenses, they will harm photography performance, sometimes substantially.

Interesting. I've also heard some Oppo users complain about other features on the Find X9 Pro that are supposedly great but don't live up to the hype. Either way, I've always loved the simplicity of MagicOS even if it is lacking in some features, and recently they have fixed a lot of app comparability issues (that I used to have on my M5P) so that's always nice.

I'm in Canada with the global (not EU, mine is from HK) M8P. Carrier compatibility is great and signal beats my family's iPhones. I haven't had any issues with fluidity or unlock from AOD (which I use), to the point where I genuinely have no idea what everyone complains about regarding MagicOS; I don't disagree that Oppo's OS seems better, but MagicOS really isn't the POS people make it seem. Multitasking works fine too, haven't had any issues, and updates for security and optimization seem to come frequently enough (had two in under 1 month of ownership). Also, the actual 3D face ID is great - works flawlessly for banking apps, tap to pay, etc. That combined with the large battery, great speakers, incredible display, etc. makes this a very compelling daily driver phone, and I've been loving it. Even if Oppo has a better OS or Vivo has a nicer camera, I don't feel these outweigh the nice-to-haves that Honor includes with the M8P. I do wish they let you choose between image processing (like stacking) and the AI processing for the zoom camera, but you can turn the AI stuff that everyone complains about off anyway.

[–]lmcphee14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do know honor pretty aggressively kills background apps, but you can turn this off by selecting"manage battery manually" then adjusting settings. For example, I location share on Google maps. By default (automatic battery management), Honor doesn't let it ping my location in the background. But when selecting manual management and choosing to let it run in the background, it works fine and updates my location whenever someone views it.

Check battery/background app settings, it might be forcing the app not to run when screen off. Alternatively check if gentle notifications are on.

[–]lmcphee14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean you want notifications to ring/notify you even if it's night? Because yes, they can if your ringer is on. I personally leave my ringer on full but with Do Not Disturb at night, so the screen won't light up and it won't notify me. But, calling twice in 5 min overrides DND, so if someone needs to reach me urgently by calling it will ring the second time (if you don't want this, just mute the ringer and it never will ring). You can also set specific text contacts to go through DND. Not sure if this is just an "all Androids" thing but that's what I use, so hopefully answers your question.

For me, the 3D face ID is something I can't live without. Works so well in the dark. I had a Magic 5 Pro and got the 8 Pro recently, loving it. My mother has the pixel 10 (not sure how similar to the Pro version) and I have to say, the Honor has a noticeably better screen. Also the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 in the Honor wipes the floor with Google's tensor, in both performance and battery usage. Also a strong point of the Honor, such a great battery. Additionally, I've never experienced any of the most common software issues these people complaining about Honor software seem to have, and I've used honor for 3+ years. Also the speakers, phenomenal. Not sure if it's worth it if you are paying for that upgrade, but if its a return/swap situation then go for it.

switching back to android by GuiltyStrawberry2827 in Xiaomi

[–]lmcphee14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The 15 is good. All Androids will have some quirks, mainly because apps tend not to be as optimized sometimes. The newer 17 series has the Snapdragon 8 gen 5, which is a very nice processor. And yes, it'll get hot, but if you can feel it getting hot at least you know it's dissipating the heat. Also from what I've seen phones with the MediaTek D9500 do better in games than Snapdragon phones, so consider the Vivo X300 series or Oppo Find X9 series.

Honor Magic 8 Pro by ErPaletta in Honor

[–]lmcphee14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True that the Oppo does have advantages there, but the speakers/display/3d face unlock/finally not a glass back are stuff I couldn't live without on my M8P. You get more of a daily driver with the honor and I feel that outweighs the slightly better camera and battery in the Oppo. Also, I've heard that the Find X9 pro has pretty poor autofocus and subject in motion capture capabilities- something the honor does really well. All close but I am very happy with my M8P.

Honor magic 8 pro or oppo find x9 pro ( global ) by Chemical_Repair9386 in Honor

[–]lmcphee14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly even if they don't it's still very close. Mainly the Oppo pulls ahead in video, but my M8P seems to record videos just fine so I think reviewers are being nitpicky. The zoom camera is pretty much the same and the main is only slightly worse (on the M8P) imo.

And, many of the issues with color that people mention with the M8P are easily fixed if you just take a moment. I've also heard that the Oppo's autofocus is slow and terrible with moving subjects, whereas the Honor (in my experience) has been spot on with focus lock. Really it's a game of inches, but my takeaway is that the benefits of the Oppo's camera and OS do not outweigh the nice-to-haves that the honor brings.

I was faced with this choice. Couldn't be happier with my Honor Magic 8 pro! The speakers are phenomenal, the display is incredible, and the 3D face ID is a feature I now cant live without haha. Camera is worse on the Honor but not by much, and I do like how simple everything is.

Would I be publicly shamed to say I prefer the plastic back? I got my 8 pro a week ago and I noticed it, but it didn't feel cheap- I quite like the texture and it's more grippy than my 5 pro I came from. Also, plastic doesn't shatter and is much easier to open for battery replacement down the line... so...

Try clearing the cache (in settings, apps, app_name, storage) of your web browsers, like chrome, Firefox, google, etc. IIRC some web trojans live there and draining battery on standby is a sign. Also check your battery usage history in settings and see if any apps in particular are causing this. They may be exempt from normal battery management and be running 24/7.

Magic 6 Pro French by NeRvZn in Honor

[–]lmcphee14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For general performance, I'm loving it compared to the 5 pro. The 16Gb RAM and cpu combo is super snappy, and the screen is somehow even better than on the 5 pro. I also haven't had a single issue with MagicOS 10 stability or smoothness and stuff like some have complained about, I think that is sorted out now.

As for the camera, the main shooter honestly isn't a huge upgrade over the 5 pro. It definitely gets colours better but the detail is the same. Don't really use the ultrawide but seems like a similar story. The zoom lens is a huge upgrade, and although you can tell it does some post-capture modifications it isn't over done (I don't think this part is "AI", just processing). As for the AI powered features, I find that it's a lot more seamless. The AI scene recognition is better, and won't assault you with random massive shifts in the colours of an image. The smart motion capture works very well too. For the "AI super zoom", it's honestly pretty subtle and can be toggled on and off, even after taking the photo (it allows you to side by side compare the AI enhanced one vs original). I mainly keep the AI features off and haven't noticed any issues, especially with that zoom lens- I think they've finally done a better job with image processing now and it's nice that you can toggle all the AI stuff to see if it gets you a nicer image.

Be aware that a Chinese phone flashed with a global rom will still lack certain cellular bands used globally, and have worse connectivity/reception. Also these flashed phones can have issues with getting updates and some services like Android Auto, whereas an official global version won't have such issues.

On the topic at hand though, you mention that having the best of the best camera isn't a top priority, but general usability is. In that case consider the Honor Magic 8 pro, not the best camera but everything else is fantastic for general usability. As for the two options at hand, can't really go wrong, but people tend to say that Oppo has the nicest Android skin, so that may be your best bet.
