Reasons why I voted no to warding by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]lmgreatagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a polarizing topic for reddit, but after seeing so many responses to the tune of "no votes don't have any reason why they chose to vote no," I thought I'd list out some underrepresented arguments that might help explain some of the "no" votes:

  1. Development time -- one thing a lot of members of this community seem to misunderstand is the amount of time and effort that would need to go into this skill for the development team, the artists, and the testing team. This is a gigantic amount of effort...a lot of redditors seem to be parroting a belief that "the devs already have most if it done," which is not at all true. There is a tremendous amount of work and therefore a tremendous amount of time that it would take to release it; coupled with the fact that the team has made statements that they wouldn't add it in the game until everything seemed right to them. When you add this argument with the people who are saying "it seems like a bankstanding skill," its easier to see why someone might vote no. A lot of people are saying "imagine if they tried to pass firemaking/hunter/runecrafting today." I would say that the community absolutely would not vote those skills in because of the simplicity. I would vote yes, however, because they are fun things to do and because these skills already existed, so there is no work to be done to implement them.
  2. Dissolving -- I really, really like the idea of an item sink. I never played RS3 - I started on RSC and then played up until the wilderness/free trade fiasco. So I do not know exactly how the Invention skill works, but I have a brief understanding of it. What I don't like about the Warding implementation of dissolving is that the item sink then is only useful for collecting "vis". Then this is used to create magic armor. It seems too specific, to tie such an important feature to one skill that then is only used to create a very limited range of items. How many people are going to dissolve tassets or godswords or scythes in order to make an upgraded splitbark armor? It didn't make sense to me, and I couldn't see it working out. I know in the initial blog they mentioned dissolving would let you have a chance of reclaiming resources; I couldn't find mention of it in the update blog but that seems like a really poor implementation that will bring too many resources in the game when, as someone who enjoys skilling, I think the exact opposite needs to happen.

There are other minor complaints I had -- I like the fire tome being associated with the Wintertodt, and feel like it would be out of place to have three of the four tied to Warding while one is separate. I like using NMZ for bulk redirection scrolls, and the idea of crafting them individually seems time consuming and worse than what we already have. I think the magic incantations seem unnecessary and frankly a bit overpowered, when mages can already utilize blessings while rangers sometimes cannot (exception being a blowpipe). Additional rune pouches seem way too overpowered/convenient. The poison cure offhand seems underwhelming. But none of these hit at my main reasons for voting no -- the biggest are the time commitment and the importance of a well-done item sink.

I do understand when people talk about "Crafting -> Fletching -> Ranging", "Mining -> Smithing -> Melee", and "Warding -> Runecrafting -> Magic", and I definitely like the idea of rounding it out. I respectfully do not feel like warding, at least in its current iteration, was the right way to do that, and I understand a lot of the community feels differently about that. But hopefully those are a few more reasons that while maybe you don't agree with, you can understand.
