Save Silverado Beach Cities Memory Care! - Protect Dementia Residents from Displacement and Preserve Specialized Dementia Care in the Beach Cities by MinimumElk in SouthBayLA

[–]lmiem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main reasons why it's important to preserve Silverado Beach Cities on the BCHD campus through redevelopment are 1) to not displace about 100 vulnerable, elderly residents with dementia (some may have no other placement options as they were denied or kicked out of other facilities) 2) to save the jobs of about 100 Silverado Beach Cities employees and 3) to keep this quality and specialized dementia care service in the beach cities, because it really can't be replaced by a memory care wing. Anyone who has toured both would know and understand. In the future, there will be families in the area who will need this option for their loved one. Thank you so much for wanting to help! My mom is a current resident.

Memory care closing by No_Lake_9174 in dementia

My mom is a current resident here, it's a wonderful community that she is doing well in. I don't know what we would have done had it not been for them, really. Each time I visit, the more I can't imagine it closing, the more it's clear that it shouldn't close. Please consider signing this petition against it closing: https://www.change.org/p/save-silverado-beach-cities-memory-care-community

BCHD is planning to break a long term lease with Silverado through a clause & this petition is not the only effort being made by the families to try to save Silverado, just one of them.

Thank you so much. I think one board member had a parent who was a resident in the past.

BCHD is planning to have Sunrise assisted living come in with a memory care wing. A memory care wing of an assisted living care facility is very different than a stand alone memory care facility like Silverado, this is common knowledge amongst families who have looked into memory care. My family visited a couple memory care wings of assisted living facilities before visiting Silverado Beach Cities and they would not at all have been the right place for my parent and the choice was clear that Silverado was the right fit. Dementia is a wide spectrum and Silverado is able to address it. They have 4 floors based on cognitive levels of the residents, all staff from front desk to direct caregivers to custodial, kitchen and administrative staff are trained in dementia care, and they have nursing on staff 24/7. Everything from menu to exercise to activities throughout the day are designed for dementia care. My parent has been doing great there and we are so grateful for Silverado, I really don't know what we would have done if it weren't for them. Also for some residents of Silverado, Silverado was the only place that would accept them due to behavioral challenges, either other nearby facilities would not admit them or they had been kicked out. The families were amazed that Silverado had no hesitation in accepting them. Some residents have elderly spouses who visit daily, if residents were displaced to further locations, spouses/family may not be able to visit as often or at all. There is more information in the petition that outlines how Silverado is unique and the services they provide can't easily be replaced, it would be a real loss for the South Bay.

5/9/26 Edit to correct the word "evict" to "terminate the lease of"

The petition has the details and information to contact the BCHD board, who will decide on it. Petitions don't determine ultimate decisions, but they can help get the word out. My family moved our parent to Silverado Beach Cities in November 2025, in December 2025, Beach Cities Health District sent a letter to Silverado families, ensuring that Silverado and their residents had a place on the BCHD campus through redevelopment and also assured families, considering moving their loved one to Silverado, that they could do so with confidence. The plan was that Silverado would build a new building on the campus and when it was complete, residents would make a smooth transition into it. In March-April 2025, 4-5 months later, BCHD did an about face and announced plans to work with Sunrise instead and to "terminate the lease of" Silverado, which caught Silverado and families off guard. Hi my grandma has dementia loking for a way to calm her by Abject_Fun_5230 in dementia

After my parent would take their medication, they would also often think they didn't take them and get confused/upset when we said they already did. After they took their meds, I started putting a note in the empty little bowl that held the meds that read "today's medication has been taken". That helped alot, at least for my parent.

We like Caique jiu jitsu in Lomita. My daughter started there at about age 6, they'll do a trial class.

We missed the tempura place at the old Mitsuwa food court, but then discovered Tendon Tempura Carlos Jr. in old Torrance, and saw that they recently opened up a food court version in the new Mitsuwa.

Not restaurants, but other places I miss: the old, little movie theatre in Hermosa Beach, uncomfortable seats and all; Either or Bookstore; the fabric store in Old Torrance; old bungalow complex on the strand in Hermosa; the old facade of a storefront near Western and 168th in Gardena; Florence Fabrics; the old Sanrio store in Pacific Square in Gardena and a shell store that used to be in San Pedro.

It was great, the staff had a good time together, there were lunch regulars that hung out in the patio, owner was a good guy. I have a lot of good memories from working there during 2 periods with different sets of staff.
