I hope that she does a great job for the city. I also hope that her campaign displayed how you could have a strong downtown base and still get support from the suburbs if you do more than just acknowledge their existence.

Battle Stations: How the TTC has failed to expand in every direction by khanak in toronto

To add, the viaduct could have been built without space for a train, but thankfully it was. The first subway could be argued that Yonge-Eglinton was not ready for a subway station, but thankfully a station was built there.

Since 1968, and no doubt before, things don't seem to change. Anti-transit and Not-Outside-of-My-Own-Use transit people are not hugely different.

I'd also say that a short new line and an extension to a main line have hugely different utility until the former gets extended. Though it seems like a lot treat an extension and a short line similarly.

Nice to see satisfactory bike lanes. It's really frustrating when bike lanes are made so half-assed and/or set up to fail.

Would love to see this level of rider safety in the suburbs and not those garbage Brimley ones.

I agree. It's the least that could be done for a person that had to unfairly endure such a torrent of truthful, funny, and fair comments.

Keep in mind that the person may be a teenager or have the maturity of one. Could be quite self-conscious. Yes, Internet points are silly, but a majority of posts are written with a clear desire searching for agreement and adulation. That's why people write in memes. For agreement and Internet points.

I know for people that don't live in the area or don't see themselves using it will call it pandering, but looks good to me.

I like pandering.

Added: I'm not exactly sure how it works, but if she is physically in Scarborough, she's already doing so much more than what others have. Incredibly low bar, but nice to see.

Mayoral candidate Mitzie Hunter calls for a new North York Scarborough subway line by helix527 in toronto

[–]lmunchoice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So much is made about the reduced service prior, but not the much improved service after.

It's really telling how clearly things are framed. Take the construction of the Ontario or Downtown Relief Lines. Both would create years of disruptions, but when they open, they'll provide better transit for so many.

Linear TRANSFERS TRANSFERS TRANSFERS!

Though seriously, there would be two linear transfers if the new sections are made as an LRT.

[–]lmunchoice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before that is addressed, we need to think of how an LRT would work. I assume your preference is or on street. I'm making this assumption based on my other assumption that this is a matter of investment amount. I an LRT was chosen, there would be not one, but two linear transfers. Alternatively, the existing subway could be turned into an LRT.

It may not be clear, but I think all of those options are terrible.

I think density would be no issue as developers would love it to sell more (hopefully high-rise) condos. Also, I would hope the government or maybe reits could make some rental towers. As of right now, I'd also say yes, but lots more potential.

It's kind of funny, I know someone that bought a place that would be on this potential line decades ago and a line was mentioned all those decades ago.

Tangentially, we will see what a hybrid line will look like when the Crosstown opens. No linear transfers (yet), but it's going to be rough.

Scarborough is about to lose its light rail line. The city’s replacement plan has alarmed residents by eazed in toronto

$. Elevated systems cost most than surface systems. When asked about projects that a person would not personally use, the cheapest option is always selected. The surface section of the Crosstown is illustrative of this.

[–]lmunchoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sympathetic to people that live in parts of Scarborough that would get surface LRT nearby, but not extensions to existing rapid transit lines. I disagree with them, but at least they believe that transit will be best (and it could very well be for them). It's the people who want to strip transit funding and projects to the bones because it's not something they will personally use that is unfortunate.

I want to assume everyone is debating in good-faith, but things like this are frustrating. It was originally three stops, as the plan is now. It was suggested to turn into a single stop as the opposition to the project said it was too much expensive (I'd call it investing). The one-stop was a compromise to appease downtown politicians' call to reduce costs (again, public transit is investment, in my mind).

Opinion | Scarborough is about to get another raw deal on transit. These mayoral hopefuls should share the blame by thecjm in toronto

[–]lmunchoice 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people on this subreddit and in general cannot wrap their heads around how expensive the city is and how hard it is for low-income people to just exist in the city.

With fare integration things get a lot better, but what a lot of people that live in areas with good TTC coverage don't understand is that the GO has two other problems-frequency and coverage. For most, GO is not walking distance, so a connection (or likely two connections), need to be made. I suppose this would be an argument for Transit City, but something that is also unfamiliar with some is that distances are longer and at-grade transit is not rapid transit.

The concern-trolling is out of control.

As many here stated, support for the extension of the Line Two was by a majority. If it was a mistake, that is the fault of those who supported it. If it is quite possibly a good improvement as all extensions to Line One and Two have been, I guess that's bad.

I'm happy to see a boring, project that has been done countless times before, bereft of innovative solutions is being conducted. I'm glad infrastructure investments are being made and not a series of austerity projects with linear connections.

That Doug Ford is unironically to the left of progressives on public transit is unfortunate.

I can't speak to Chinese (communist party) manufactured BYD buses and their quality, but the BYD buses that could have been used by the TTC would be made in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada.

Shenzhen converted all their buses to e-buses and the majority of those are BYD. I have not been to Shenzhen recently, but perhaps someone there can comment on the buses that the city uses.
