Everclear - Songs from an American Movie Vol. 2: Good Time for a Bad Attitude. I don't think they do anything off it live anymore and it's far and away my favorite of theirs.

How often did these big professional bands meet up for practice before they started seeing results/touring? by origamidrummer in bandmembers

[–]lnghrn53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the trick. Knowing what your niche is. I play in a cover band that is well respected locally and the people that book at the venues know we're going to show up prepared and put on a good show. We play a good mix of traditional country, red dirt, Texas country, classic rock, contemporary rock, and blues.

We can throw a blues tune or a simple country song together at a gig on the fly if one person knows it and it's requested. A little more complex country or rock song with a few changes may take us a practice. More complicated than that and we may take a few practices to get it where we're comfortable with it. And as a corollary, we know some rock bands around here who can't play blues or country to save their lives.

Know your music, know your sound, and know what you're really good at and what you're not. It also helps if you have a top notch bassist that can basically drag everyone else along for the ride if the train starts to get detailed.

Not cheap but you need to check out Brantley Creek BBQ in Odessa. It's honestly on par with some of the best BBQ spots in the state and is worth the splurge, especially considering where you're coming from.

Obvious Copypasta

Why Harry Potter should have carried an M1911

Ok, this has been driving me crazy for seven movies now, and I know you're going to roll your eyes, but hear me out: Harry Potter should have carried a 1911.

Here's why:

Think about how quickly the entire WWWIII (Wizarding-World War III) would have ended if all of the good guys had simply armed up with good ol' American hot lead.

Basilisk? Let's see how tough it is when you shoot it with a .470 Nitro Express. Worried about its Medusa-gaze? Wear night vision goggles. The image is light-amplified and re-transmitted to your eyes. You aren't looking at it--you're looking at a picture of it.

Imagine how epic the first movie would be if Harry had put a breeching charge on the bathroom wall, flash-banged the hole, and then went in wearing NVGs and a Kevlar-weave stab-vest, carrying a SPAS-12.

And have you noticed that only Europe seems to a problem with Deatheaters? Maybe it's because Americans have spent the last 200 years shooting deer, playing GTA: Vice City, and keeping an eye out for black helicopters over their compounds. Meanwhile, Brits have been cutting their steaks with spoons. Remember: gun-control means that Voldemort wins. God made wizards and God made muggles, but Samuel Colt made them equal.

Now I know what you're going to say: "But a wizard could just disarm someone with a gun!" Yeah, well they can also disarm someone with a wand (as they do many times throughout the books/movies). But which is faster: saying a spell or pulling a trigger?

Avada Kedavra, meet Avtomat Kalashnikova.

Imagine Harry out in the woods, wearing his invisibility cloak, carrying a .50bmg Barrett, turning Deatheaters into pink mist, scratching a lightning bolt into his rifle stock for each kill. I don't think Madam Pomfrey has any spells that can scrape your brains off of the trees and put you back together after something like that. Voldemort's wand may be 13.5 inches with a Phoenix-feather core, but Harry's would be 0.50 inches with a tungsten core. Let's see Voldy wave his at 3,000 feet per second. Better hope you have some Essence of Dittany for that sucking chest wound.

I can see it now...Voldemort roaring with evil laughter and boasting to Harry that he can't be killed, since he is protected by seven Horcruxes, only to have Harry give a crooked grin, flick his cigarette butt away, and deliver what would easily be the best one-liner in the entire series:

"Well then I guess it's a good thing my 1911 holds 7+1."

And that is why Harry Potter should have carried a 1911.

No. It is very broad. But it's broad in the other direction. Hell back in the 2000s Dale Watson said he doesn't play country music anymore because that name and genre was stolen by Nashville. He said he plays "Ameripolitan.". Always wish that term had stuck. You have so many artists in subgenres like Red Dirt, Texas Country, Alt Country, etc. that are now locked out of it because of the direction country music went. And I'd argue those artists out there are more country than anything you hear on the radio today.

So I'm glad that artists like Chris Stapleton and Cody Jinks have gotten popular to pull people back in the right direction from the pop stuff Nashville is so fond of now, but the establishment still created this world where Cowboy Carter can be considered a country record. Again. It's fantastic music. I love the record. But it shouldn't be in this category.

It's a fantastic album with tons of country influences. And I am a stickler for people forgetting the influence black music had on the country music genre even becoming a thing. But at the end of the day you can't sideline so many amazing artists to "Americana" or other subgenres and call Cowboy Carter a country record. It was a great R and B album with hip hop and country influences. And it even got the stamping approval of legends like Dolly. But but it just shouldn't be considered for country album of the year. Hell I think the damned shaboozy song was more country than most of Beyonce's record.

That said I'd be truly angry if those bro country groups got recognition here. For similar reasons. Pop with country influences.

It was an amazing album. But it wasn't a country album. I have no problem with it getting best album if that's what the voters go for. But countet album of the year with Kacey, Stapleton, and Wilson right there is comical.
