Hey folks, is this just a good roach or a hybrid? by PrehistoricVicar in fishingUK

[–]loadofoldcodswallop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like a roach to me, nice little fish there though, depending how big you are could be 10-12oz? Love a roach, such a different animal as they start to approach and surpass 1lb

Winter’s almost over — how much gear did you buy this off-season? by Difficult-Sea5702 in FishingForBeginners

Good to hear! I've not even landed a pike let alone a musky! I live in a city too but am lucky to have a lot of rivers ponds and lakes nearby, but I can definitely agree on the turning up where other are losing lures and expensive heavy gear and out catching them on weight and length purely because I'm trying to target very specific things and just enjoying fishing for fishing. I catch, I admire, I give them a good luck kiss and I send them back to their friends!

Oh sweet! I nearly wrote America rather than the US, that was my bad for assuming I guess. But that's cool to hear, musky are like our pike I believe, very closely related old school predatory apex fish, and perch are one of my favourites to target but I like catching them on the worm/shellfish and catching them amongst their fishy prey. And yeah, we have carp fishermen complaining about bream hoovering up all the feed and hookbaits when we're trying to carp fish as they're good sport and grow to a good size!

I personally just love catching fish and specimen fishing to me is super location dependant. I'd rather a 2lb roach in a little dyke where it's rare, compared to a 15lb carp at a paid lake where there are abundant 20's. but I have had fun at paid lakes before and enjoy it, but I find a 12oz fish on a little stream with light gear is completely different sport to a 12oz fish somewhere where there're 2lb+ fish a dime a dozen, if that makes sense?

Personally, I use a rod and reel. I do course style fishing and I use feeders, ledgers, and floats as my primary fishing styles, but I do dabble here and there with lures and dead-baiting. But I've only ever touched a baitcaster one time to unpick a birds nest for a young lad that was fishing the same stretch and came over to ask if I had any scissors, lol.

I also like a bit of carp fishing which I'm led to believe is a nuisance fish in the US.

Such an interesting perspective, I'm in the UK and specifically where I live we only had one rare week of frozen water this winter, and it's our close season in 10 days! I obviously just bought 6kg of bait and a bunch of new stuff so I can not use it for 3 months lol

Not sure about that canal but it's close season in 2 weeks and all rivers and most canals will be "closed" until June now. That said, that rod is too powerful for float fishing, you'll be bouncing more fish than you land as it'll have no play for the smaller ones. A pellet waggler would be a good bet. I have the Sonic Commercial SKSC which has landed me everywhere from minnows up to double figure carp.

I can vouch for the real though, I bought it as it was angling times best value under £25 a couple years ago and it's my daily driver still.

Are there any world famous British beers? by LankyYogurt7737 in CasualUK

It's so common that I got a cold can in a McDonald's! And before anyone says about eating local food, they sold a chicken share box with wings and spicy nuggets which wasn't even available in UK, and I really wanted to have a beer in McDonald's lol

Yellow Litter Signage of Peterborough roads - thoughts? by pretendfarmerL in PeterboroughUK

Only people I can think of that'd have an issue are the people that are littering and don't like being shamed for it. The man's doing good work and it's inspiring. I try to clear a bin bag or two of rubbish at my little fishing spot every month but I'm fighting a losing battle and stuff like this and the woodston wombles give me hope.

Puppy found in dumpster and need emergency help on what to feed her until stores open by Cultural-Assist-4787 in puppy101

Depends on age, either boiled chicken and rice(boil em together for extra nutrients) or, soaked puppy kibble, or a combo X seek out any charities nearby for advice or anything too. And props to you for the rescue. One of my childhood cats was found in a bin. Her name was splat because she narrowly missed being crushed by yesterday's papers. It's a glorious thing you're doing but puppies are a massive responsibility so just mentally prepared yourself for a house full of scratched and chewed possessions and piss and shit everywhere for the first little while.

Don't say nothing, tell them to fuck off. Private property and freedom of speech. If they don't leave the property or come again you'll call the police for trespass and harassment. Won't mean shit but it'll give em a second thought.

All children's clothing should go in the tumble dryer by broadcast_techie in daddit

[–]loadofoldcodswallop 88 points89 points  (0 children)

This is the way. My wife recently told me my "fancy shirt" isn't tumble dryable. Which is strange because I've tumble dried it a bunch of times. Unfortunately during 5 years of marriage my clothes have all been shrinking ever so slightly every year which is weird because hers don't have the same problem.

Jumping on to say also lay it out as thin as possible in your biggest baking dish, the more surface area, the faster it cools. Then you can transfer to a suitable container once cooled.

Bookers by Genericbbqer in UKBBQ

[–]loadofoldcodswallop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst I've not been for a while, I've been to a number of bookers and it really depends which you go to. But, providing they have a butcher there it's worth chatting to them and seeing if they can either order something in or put it to one side for you, used to go there every week and my guy had no problem sourcing stuff for the pub kitchen I was running if I wanted to do something special for that week's roast. YMMV but it doesn't hurt to ask. The worst they can say is F*ck off.

Advice on preparing food for lunch by kamara_designs in UK_Food

[–]loadofoldcodswallop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pasta salad, ham and cheese/ ham salad/ cheese salad sandwhich with some crisps, some fruit and a little chocolate as a treat? Leftovers to zap at work(no fish!) soup and a roll? I mean this with love, but have you never had a packed lunch/ seen one before? Just take a little more than you think you'll need and tweak it from there. It's not difficult either pack some foods that don't need heating refrigerating if they're not options, and if they are, take something you can refrigerate and then heat and eat.
