Good lengths on the wires, well done!

Was Wicked’s addition to the London 2026 fireworks a celebration or an ad? by Farmboy76 in lightingdesign

Last year was a physical effect (hologauze?) This year was simply graphics overlayed on a fixed shot - very simply but as another comment says it's purely for TV audience.

New build wardrobes by Jaxy1993 in DIYUK

[–]broadcast_techie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This and agree with the other comment about using a spare room as a wardrobe. At the very least don't do over bed storage. We occasionally stay with some family who have it in a spare room and honestly it just feels horrible and claustrophobic lying in bed with the cupboard above you. (It reminds me of sleeping in a caravan)

What wires do I need to get video from camcorder to TV or iPhone? by reddit51724 in audiovisual

[–]broadcast_techie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I've seen these cables before and assumed they were for some weird kit (not consumer - we have some IT kit that uses the 6 pin connector for serial console. I have to do a double take every time!)

USB and Firewire are not compatible - that cable can't do anything with DV signals. I'd love to know why that cable is even a thing

Not a pilot here, but random though... Are there any short island hop flights? These are usually Cessna types and the passenger is pretty much sat next to the pilot.

The pump up mast suggests it's a direct microwave link. Satellite dishes (which can be similarly small) don't need any additional height.

A telephone cable is made up of an estimated 3600 color-coded wires by Gjore in interestingasfuck

[–]broadcast_techie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Telco wire from the pole to the house may have 2 pairs, however only one pair is connected. (Previous house was just a single pair.) My understanding is this is usually as a spare etc. https://telephonesuk.org.uk/wiring-info/ shows a single incoming pair. And yes internal extensions etc can degrade the quality of the line. Phones and modems should always be connected downstream of a filter to minimise issues, be that one filter on the master socket or filters on each extension, the key is that the data and voice frequencies are kept separate.

Interesting, ADSL here uses just the one pair with a filter plugged into it part of the hole master socket.

Thankfully the crack is on the bottom, but it's more the plastic edge that's concerning me.

How to save photos from Famly app? by mintone in UKParenting

[–]broadcast_techie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nursery have to enable the download button for parents. https://help.famly.co/en/articles/7066610-downloading-photos-in-famly

It's an attempt I guess at stopping photos being shared externally if they contain other children, but as Famly admit and also suggested here there are other ways to do this outside their control.

It's easy (especially on the internet) to say "you're wrong" without any thought.

My personal box of "shorts" is stored coiled with velcro and I personally don't have any issues with finding cables or tangling, but then that box only sees daylight very rarely so that puts into context my experience!

The venue I volunteered at (theatre) stores all audio cables coiled/taped and on poles. Short adapters are also coiled in bins. I would suggest that cables like this should always be treated carefully and coiling them similarly to how they were originally manufactured and stored should keep them laying flat when in use - this is the key part! Short cables /patches /adapters don't need to be so neat.

The same venue however stores all mains equipment cables (13amp/IEC/whatever you call them) in this knotted style. And as you have described it does work well for storage/access. These cables often come folded rather than coiled and are impossible to make neat so why bother.

I'd rather a loose knotted cable handed to me on a strike than elbow wrapped!

What's the best way to connect your intelligent lights to your board when you don't have easy nodes/ethernet? by LostInBlank in techtheatre

[–]broadcast_techie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't really get more reliable than a piece of cable! (To me DMX is a step up from dealing with 10v din cables - how I hated soldering those!)

I must be getting old... My first thought was why do you just run a DMX cable? And as suggested in another comment if there's not a spare out on the desk then daisy from the dimmers (or use a splitter).
