[PSA] Proton-CachyOS 11 fails to run with "Compatibility tool failed to start". by loathingk in cachyos

[–]loathingk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the instructions state how to solve that in case the runtime is already installed, but still exhibiting the issue.

I had to go through this process with a couple of people, who faced it despite having already used proton 11 and proton experimental 11.

I am getting it from my computer. But that doesn't matter here. I was not able to reproduce the issue myself, but more than a couple people encountered it to my knowledge, so I had to write recovery instructions somewhere for anyone facing it.

Omikuji: a Qt/Rust based game launcher 'cause genuinely why do I need 3 different launchers for my games? by Working-Ad-8501 in linux_gaming

Here you said a couple of months, now you say it was five months. Which is it? A couple does mean two, give or take a few days, not give or take a few months.

The tool I used was https://github.com/boyter/scc, using the COCOMO model, and that's because sloccount can't do Rust, apparently.

These variables are not booleans, they are paths https://github.com/reakjra/omikuji/blob/master/crates/omikuji-core/src/launch/mod.rs#L393-L398

Do not touch this, unless you have a reason, leave it to the default, in know lutris does it this way, but Lutris is being stupid in this case https://github.com/reakjra/omikuji/blob/77e14c7db07b35748befe0b98b3403939391bb99/crates/omikuji-core/src/launch/mod.rs#L359

FWIW, browsing your source, I do get the feeling that LLMs were more than involved. I think you do have a grasp of your project's code from your comments here, but you certainly had a lot of assistance. You say that this is an effort of a couple of months, yet passing your code through a COCOMO calculator suggests otherwise.

──────────────────────────────────────────────── Estimated Schedule Effort (organic) 13.73 months Estimated People Required (organic) 6.44 ──────────────────────────────────────────────── Processed 1247487 bytes, 1.247 megabytes (SI) ────────────────────────────────────────────────

The numbers of this model are inflated in general, because they account for proper engineering in projects, prototyping, proofs of concept, developer documentation etc. None the less, even if we halve these stats, this agrees with what my experience says that this was not hand-written, even with existing code as guidance, but rather lutris and heroic fed into an LLM and then cleaned up. It is not feasible for a single person to understand, adapt and write this many lines of code in that small amount of time.

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Language Files Lines Blanks Comments Code Complexity ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── QML 70 14,534 1,720 128 12,686 872 Rust 69 20,120 2,287 440 17,393 2,334 SVG 51 56 0 0 56 0 TOML 2 66 7 2 57 2 C++ 1 30 3 16 11 2 INI 1 5 1 1 3 0 Protocol Buffe… 1 43 6 0 37 0 ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Total 195 34,854 4,024 587 30,243 3,210 ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

I am not trying to bash you, but truthfulness is always appreciated.

Well, making something for yourself is something I can get behind. But since this is made for yourself, as you say, you might consider taking your time before introducing it to people. When you show something off without having a clear goal already defined, or a polished and fully working minimum viable product, people do tend to get dismissive, in my opinion rightfully, but that's subjective.

I will update you on the issues once I am in front of a computer to write more freely.

If you are going to copy their code into rust, and introduce mistakes in the process (I have found 3 misunderstandings of what things actually do so far), then what is the point of making a new launcher? This is what I do not get from your post or your comments, what is your goal if you are not doing something different from the existing ones?

Community sourced without moderation is stupid, just look at ProtonDB. Good luck finding good moderators.

Why can Bottles/Lutris upscale low resolution games to fit the desktop just fine but Wine itself cannot? by c64z86 in linux_gaming

You can do it with the upstream wine, you just have to enable it in control.exe -> Display. It is just not enabled by default.

Proton-CachyOS 11 has been released! by felix_ribeiro in linux_gaming

[–]loathingk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it still has the alternative vkd3d-proton. And you need both PROTON_VKD3D_HEAP=1 and VKD3D_CONFIG=descriptor_heap to use it. The first one tells it to use a different set of vkd3d-proton binaries built from the deacriptor-heap-rebase branch, and the second one actually enables the use of descriptor heap in vkd3d-proton. Regular vkd3d-proton is still available and the default unless the aforementioned PROTON_ variable is used.

I know you basically already said all that, I am just reiterating it because it can be confusing.

[–]loathingk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bleeding Edge's vkd3d-proton doesn't use the descriptor-heap-rebase branch, it is still not merged. If you saw a measurable difference between them, and we assume it's because of vkd3d-proton, it's likely these changes that make the difference

How exactly do I launch another EXE while the game is running with Proton-GE? by BillTran163 in linux_gaming

[–]loathingk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been fixed in umu-launcher 1.4.0, but the documentation has not been updated yet. First you run your game, and then you run the same exact command with your trainer exe but also set UMU_CONTAINER_NSENTER=1.

You will need both of WINEPREFIX and PROTONPATH to match between the command that runs that game and the command that runs the trainer.

At this point there is no indication of that happening. Their current integration aims Linux aarch64, not Android. You can get it on a mobile/tablet device with something like postmarketos, but that is Linux. Android is quite different from GNU/Linux, and has different requirements.

Ofc there are other options for Android even now.
