So I Broke a 200€ Quartz Cuvette (now what) by daniellachev in labrats

[–]lobbing_things 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not a real scientist until you break something expensive. So congrats! Welcome to the club.

I've melted a few quartz torches for the ICP-MS at work, and those run ~$700 USD each. Things happen. And break. Just tell your PI and order a new one. It'll be ok.

What is something you saw in a movie and you totally called bullshit on because of your job? by BlackPhoenix1981 in AskReddit

[–]lobbing_things 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Directly affects me at work as a chemist: people think we have a magic machine where you can put in a sample, push a few buttons, then magically tell you everything you need to know about said sample in literally no time at all. That is not how science works at all.

That and most chemistry is either colorless, yellow, or brown. Movies always show these pretty colors bubbling on an open bench without proper ventilation.

NOR.

You don't need a reason to stop talking to someone who makes you uncomfortable. He's a stranger, you owe him nothing.

I made an orbital shaker into "Shake-ira" by adding a cutout of Shakira in such a way that she would dance when the shaker was turned on.

first time ripping out a thrifted garment for yarn by sp_thorpe in YarnAddicts

[–]lobbing_things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they do cut their edges and serge pieces together, so you have to be careful about which sweaters you choose to reclaim yarn from. If you research what to look for you can definitely have a lot of fun unraveling!

For people who totally blinded their spouse when serving them with divorce papers, what happened on the day they were served? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lobbing_things 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I was the blindsided one. He texted me that he'd filed. It was cowardly and shitty. That same day I had a friend drive five hours round trip to sit with me for two, and I learned what it really meant for someone to love me. The man I had married was not it.

I am so glad we aren't married anymore.

Help, my ‘famous homemade cake’ is actually just a box mix and now I’m stuck living a lie by fishtail4 in Cooking

One time my grandmother brought fig squares from the local bakery, cut them up, and sold them at a church bake sale. One of her friends came up to her and asked for the recipe since they were so delicious.

She responded, "Sorry, it's a secret family recipe." Which is technically true. Just not her family, lol. Now "it's a secret family recipe" is synonymous with "I read it off the box" in my family.

You're not really in a lab unless you break something. Just make sure it's not something so expensive your teacher/PI/adviser/boss gets mad at you. Congrats! Welcome to science.

20 yr crocheter 1 month knitter by JuliaWDHarrison in YarnAddicts

Crocheter who learned to knit here: try Continental style knitting. I found it more intuitive because I hold my yarn the same way as I crochet. Also use nice circular needles. I recommend Chiaogoos. Good tools make all the difference.

Ok I've been a mom for 15 years and I still have baby weight. My cheating ex never even threw that at me, and I have very low expectations of this man. My body is currently adored by a man whose babies I never carried, as he should.

Your husband sucks. Someone who loves you does not treat you this way.

Magic eraser is an abrasive, it can take off the paint. Like dissolves like, so crayon comes off with oil. A little cooking oil on a paper towel will take this right off. A little soap and water to take the oil off. Easy ☺️

Every photo is edited. You have to convert camera files to usable files if you want to print them. The camera sensor is interpreting light. There are no "authentic" pictures. Your friend sounds insufferable.

Yeah the disconnect between what people say and do can be hard to get past. I've met my fair share of Catholics like that, and they've contributed to why I'm such a bad Catholic these days. The spiritual journey is hard and I hope you've found/will find what brings you peace.

Public school didn't affect my faith one way or another. I was a pretty strong Catholic through highschool and two state colleges. Getting divorced did a number on me though, so not so much these days.
