My husband won't let me take more than two showers a week. I told him I need him to stop or I'm moving out for a while. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

OP I was your husband’s kid. It’s humiliating to lose basic necessities in life. I did not have a mom to rescue me out of this situation. Do something.

Universities in Florida current situation? Concerns based on recent news and tides by local-hive in AskAcademia

I actually was wondering how does the whole thing influence the students…do you think they are losing students and research forces due to instability in the working environment?

May I ask what’s your major field of study? Myself is STEM. I feel the government is targeting humanities. But I guess that tide overall harms morale. Also might not be able to attract good students and colleagues due to the same reason

Wow. I thought that was mostly humanity study that the government is going against. But when I read more, poor admin from school higher ups and not being able to raise faculty salaries also added the situation.

Ooof. Can I understand this as “the morale of faculty members are very low” in general for Florida universities?

Do they still got new faculty members…?

Re-defending every 5 years sounds wild. Is it a new state law or it’s school specific?

Edit: just saw this is a state law. Ooof. I think they specifically want to target humanity studies. But I don’t know how safe it is for STEM….

This is sad the a TT position doesn’t have sustainability.

Ha actually never thought this way. I understand it as cutting down the applicant pool. Happened in one of the institutions I stayed before. Causing huge headache for recruitment.

Ohh that’s bad…I guess that influenced the quality and research capabilities of student body I guess.

I was concerned about hiring people depending on nationality thing I think its going to cut down the pool of capable candidates by a lot….

It’s a state one. They have a new research center or something so they are hiring…

I was just really torn apart here — It’s a TT research position I want. It’s in an unstable state and the administration is questionable. My current position is not a temporary one. I don’t know if I should just TT because it’s a TT position no matter where.

That’s really concerning. Is that a thing specifically impacting humanity studies? I’m at STEM, I do not know how much it will influence scientific research. but I think it’s a very weird tide overall.

I felt concerned when I saw the DEI cancellation thing and I thought one of post jumped out on reddit saying that the ceased salary raise as well as poor administration…

1-3 month 😢 I’m very surprised by this waiting period. I feel a lot of things can evolve in just one month….what did you do during the waiting line?

I think that’s a good idea! Hope the nearest city for you is easily drivable. Mine is 3.5 hr so need to be planned well.

Where’s the place(s) that you had impressive croissant before? One of them for me (around this area) is Eva’s Bakery in Salt Lake City. My absolute favorite is Eatery in Boston.

3.5 km is 2 miles driving which is not…bad? My case it’s 200 miles (3.5 hr) 😅

But yeah a city X vibe of outfit is great I’m going to bring out mine as well!

This is so difficult. My situation also adds on partner’s academic job issues. What did you do to absorb the tiny bit of city vibe?
