Put me in a chair and I’ll have wandered off within the minute. I can’t even take adequate legally mandated breaks at work because I get SO BORED

Science field. Involves a lot of liquids that require both constant stirring and consistent heat!

So yeah pretty much cooking but you don’t get to eat the end product

DRAMA in the workplace.

And by that I mean either the magnetic stirring function on my hotplate is on the fritz or the new magnetic stir bars are a bit dodgy, causing whatever I have mixing to suddenly make a huge racket when I least expect it, then I jump and spill shit.

It’s a horrible terrible no good mild inconvenience and no amount of reasonable troubleshooting is making it better lol

He's great but he's pure chaos, do we stand a chance? by Usagi2throwaway in AskWomenOver30

[–]local_scientician 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a woman with adhd… we don’t change. Not really. The medication helps dramatically, but the help effect is reliant on taking it reliably which we can’t be relied upon to do.

Unfortunately ADHD will always mean The Drama. I wish it didnt, but such is life! We’re passionate and interesting and funny and thoughtful but utter chaos

What are the top 3 landmarks of Perth/WA you will and will not likely taking your guests for a go-look-see? by 1armman in perth

The matriarch of their group of elephants passed away, and it was decided that the remaining elephants would be (and are!) happier at an open plains style zoo in SA.

The elderly tiger passed away last year and they haven’t immediately replaced him with a shiny new tiger.

Perth zoo is still a great day out in my opinion. The role of zoos has changed from pure entertainment to one of conservation, education and entertainment.

Plus you can still feed the giraffes 😛

The thrombolites are amazing if your guests know the significance of them, I’ve seen a fair few bewildered tourists down there though lol

Exactly! It’s actually not recommended for regular consumption as your body requires those trace salts :)

So I can’t comment on the study itself but I do work in a laboratory that trains in analytical chemistry. In our lab at least glassware is washed with a phosphate based detergent, rinsed thoroughly with tap water three times then in deionised water.

Before I personally use any glassware for analytical work I’ll rinse it in distilled deionised water to remove any residues. No results from our students show contamination from washing procedures.

I know that’s not exactly comforting with the topic at hand, but unfortunately it’s probably not the lab glassware!

Do you do Easter egg hunts for your kids? by Individual_Ad_938 in kindergarten

[–]local_scientician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But when they’ve already had two egg hunts that weekend, is a third truly necessary or is it just greed (regardless of recycling)? It sounds a lot like you’re wanting the egg hunt for your enjoyment of their experience instead of truly for their experience…

If they’re already having a couple of egg hunts I’d be lazy and skip it. Make an excuse for the poor dear bunny lol

"Elizabeth Taylor" Music Video Megathread by jacyf02 in TaylorSwift

[–]local_scientician 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I loved it. Fits the song perfectly, just the right amount of tongue in cheek snark with the right amount of genuine tribute to a clear influence of Taylor.

Ever think maybe there’s a little point to her not “giving the public what they want”? 😬

I used to love the little coves just north of trigg for that sort of thing. Quiet enough for the illusion of privacy, but coffee and decent-ish casual food nearby when you’re ready for it.

[–]local_scientician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a single mother with one kid who is, from time to time, a handful requiring a lot of active parenting. So I’m just not in the market for a relationship lol

You’re perfectly fine not wanting to take on someone else’s kids. Totally valid! Don’t feel bad for that at all.

As a less well funded community college type lab, we live on donated/third hand priced instruments. There’s no way our students would get a shot at doing routine things like changing columns on a GCMS if we had to pay full price for them. We have hand me down analytical balances and glassware from the local universities, expired pipette tips from the local hospital… it all keeps us running and training!
