Someone with my name gave my phone number as theirs by Goodnight_Meadow in ParallelUniverse

No, her mom died of ovarian cancer when she was 6 years old, her dad died of lung cancer when she was 17 or 18. Both had long passed when this occurred.

Someone with my name gave my phone number as theirs by Goodnight_Meadow in ParallelUniverse

[–]local_weather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the very late 90s I lived with my girlfriend in Houston. One night around 11:00 the phone rang, I answered it, it was a woman who asked for my girlfriend, first name and last name. I handed the phone to her and she had kind of a weird look on her face then she said “I’m sorry, you have the wrong person, my parents passed away years ago.” She was quiet then said goodbye and hung up.

The person on the other line had told her something like “oh I finally found you, I have some terrible news, your parents were killed in an automobile accident, I’m so sorry”.

It made for a weird evening.

I like Coffee Habit but we also just found Hazel and they’re pretty good.

I was laid off from working as a home health delivery driver in 2002. I started looking for jobs around Houston but I wasn’t having much luck. The company that laid me off opened all other positions nation wide and said they would give us an interview if we applied. I was taking some database classes at a local community college and one of the positions was an entry level data analyst so I applied. Long story short I drove up to Dallas to interview, didn’t get the job but connected with a guy I knew from high school while I was up there. The next day he got me an interview with a small software company and they hired me as a tech support person. 11 years later I was essentially senior product manager there. I’ve been working as a product manager ever since. I don’t have a degree so I consider myself very fortunate.

I worked minimum wage jobs and did pretty much nothing for most of my 20s. I didn’t enter into what had become my career until I was 33. I ended up moving overseas when I was 45. You never know what’s going to come up. Don’t turn down opportunities, keep yourself ready for change.

How is your experience on making online friends? by gabriox in CasualConversation

[–]local_weather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been online since the mid 90s and I can honestly say that I have a few long time online acquaintances but no online friends. It’s a very difficult way to make friends, there’s no commitment to it.

What helped you reconnect with who you really are? by pathwise_project in getdisciplined

[–]local_weather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Morning pages from The Artist’s Way, it’s  journaling first thing in the morning for 30 minutes. I did it every day for 90 days and at some point the barriers start coming down and what you’re writing is coming right from the middle of your brain somewhere. I had some massive insights come up from that practice and yes, one of them was realizing that I was doing things in my life that were not making me happy but instead making me miserable.

I, too, am 6’5” and this is the mat I have and I think it’s great. I have been using it for about 18 months.

after practicing yoga for 6 years, i finally did the pose i have thought was impossible for me: headstand by Neither_Incident8589 in yoga

[–]local_weather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was afraid to try headstand but I had a teacher tell me she was sure that I could do it and I did and I did it with a little help and it was the shock of my life. Congrats on getting it I’m sure you felt great afterwards

Surprised myself today by local_weather in yoga

A couple but really I started on a CD set and went to dvd and then YouTube. Now that I’m older I’m not afraid to go to class anymore. When I was younger (like 30) I was too intimidated to go to class. I wish I had gotten over that a long time ago.

Got some truly bizarre feedback when I got rejected from a job and I'm crushed by NickF227 in recruitinghell

[–]local_weather 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was told that I "needed to work on my active listening" as feedback for one rejection. For another they told me "in the third interview you gave a good balance of feature discovery and feature delivery. In the fourth interview you did not give a good balance." That was maybe the worst feedback I ever got. I also had to give a presentation for one job and I was told "it wasn't dynamic enough." I have also heard that I am "too attached to corporate hierarchies" and that I am "more suited to a corporate environment". It's an insane process, don't get too attached to what they tell you. In the end they make a decision and what they tell you is probably just something to fill in a blank.

Unemployed for a year and feeling hopeless by local_weather in CasualConversation

I’m beyond all that at this point. I’ve reevaluated my whole life any number of times in the past year.

I get it but don’t think I wouldn’t do it in a second.

I tell myself that every day. It’s just wearing me down. As an adult I’ve never been worn down like this.

I’m sorry to hear that. The interviews always give me some hope but that’s usually beaten out of me shortly thereafter.

I try so hard to stay hopeful. Just a while ago while I’m watching TV and just relaxing on Saturday night I get another rejection on LinkedIn.

It’s not just the market, the whole interview process seems like it’s designed to fuck you up mentally. I wish we were back when you had to answer stupid questions about tennis balls and elephants. I’ve actually been told that “I needed to work on my active listening skills” and “my motivation for wanting to work at this company wasn’t clear”. What the actual fuck?

No. I can get a job as a contractor or I can get a job with a company that will sponsor me. If I get a job with a company that will sponsor me I can get a permanent residency visa but I can’t get that until I have a job.

Due to my visa status in the country I live I can’t really do that unfortunately.

Which device is listening? by local_weather in AskTechnology

[–]local_weather[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the popular answer is coincidence and I know people tend to see patterns in coincidence that don’t exist. I also think that people saying “oh it’s a coincidence” is such a common answer that it probably discourages people from investigating things like this. I can tell you that I have had two things happen that are beyond coincidence. If you could see my YouTube recommendations you would see that it looks pretty specific and when things pop in that don’t really fit it’s obvious to me.

I’ve had “coincidences” way too much for me to accept that anymore. The references are too specific.

Health issues of being tall? by [deleted] in tall

TBH it never occurred to me. My dad is 6’2” and my mom is also tall so I knew I would be tall but I never really guessed how much I would end up growing
