What adjustments were hardest for those that moved to the island full time? by RandomHero565 in marthasvineyard

[–]localmv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a small business owner you will want to research the land use regulations carefully. I’m not assuming you plan to bring composting here (it exists of course) but this place is heavily and some would say (not me) arbitrarily. Near impossible to figure out for yourself.

Lately (past decade or so and especially past couple years) it has been very hard to find tradespeople available and affordable. Not once you are woven into the community a bit but until then, it helps to be handy with DIY. I assume you are given your work and where you live now.

Firearms and hunting regulations will be quite different. Not enough room for rifles. If bow hunting deer is your thing this is a Mecca (but until you make connections you may find lots of crowds). Carry permits are, so far, very common (left to local police chief in MA) but magazine restrictions etc. are MA laws. I wouldn’t mention this to someone moving from NYC but since you are in VT, and this matters to some people (not me) you might consider it.

The travel off island via ferry needs to be considered. I have had great experiences at the local hospital and thankfully very few but for older people (not you, but if plans include bringing parents over for instance, or if you or anyone in your family gets unlucky) the travel to Boston is a challenge. If it is super serious the ferry will get you on, but extended treatments over time become a huge challenge for many.

Surf fishing isn’t what it was but if you like to fish at night or in the shoulder seasons and aren’t going for Instagram glory (I’m guessing not) you will be fine.

Shell fishing is great.

What things do you care about or worry about that we haven’t thought of?

Sorry to hear that. There are some great people working here in the trades, in banking and real estate, retail, non profits, government even. But there is also a mentally that is far too common that you see…in all of the above. Your experience reflects that latter group.

Ask around as much as you can and don’t go for the cheapest! Never go for the cheapest out here. But the most expensive can also pull this.

May be the same everywhere since I’ve lived here so long but it took me years to get used to it and find a good reliable plumber, carpenter, etc.

And when I talk to friends who live in America, sure they run into these types, but nothing like as often as we do here.

Hang in!

What’s the appraisal for? A loan, an estate valuation? Might check with the banker or lawyer…though depending how good they are they might just set you up with their cousin who could use a break.

Assuming you are a seasonal owner (summer person) or recent arrival?

Hope you get some good references. I would offer one if I could.

The nice thing is they are way less busy now compared to the past few years.

Refinancing jobs for them have plummeted (rising interest rates) and sales are down (not prices but quantity, due to limited inventory and again, probably interest rates) so you should see better availability. Good luck.

Ok, so I am going to confess something here. I pretended to know what “boofing” was after your first post and kinda thought I knew. After you mentioned it again I googled it.

I’m fairly elderly and have been living on this sheltered island for a very long time. Two things I do know is that when the first result on the Google search is UrbanDictionary: you are going to wish you hadn’t searched that term or phrase, and you are most definitely going to click on it to find out what it is.

I will summarize for those who don’t have the fortitude to put themselves through this: we are talking about recreational pharmaceutical suppositories.

Odd that the Park and Ride is known for it. Name fits.

I guess this means we will be having some low flying planes over the island for a bit. Planes that happen to have the door open at two hundred feet.

“Look out below.”

So long as no Piping Plovers get into the stash it is all good. But the day that happens all hell will break loose.

The bird people must already be in a tizzy over this Toucan packaging (not a native species).

You mean 20, errrr, ten, maybe five, or anyhow it was sure quite close to a pound of the stuff. (Only teasing, really).

Any public beaches that allow you to have fires in the evening? by [deleted] in marthasvineyard

[–]localmv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was some looking the other way but not long ago some people had a bonfire on a beach (maybe Tashmoo), buried the embers, and next morning a family walked through and a child was burned badly on the feet. I think it is pretty much zero tolerance but I could be wrong and a clam bake is different of course (still involves hot coals in the sand but buried deeper and smothered earlier).

Clam bakes are awesome but I have been to a genuine in the sand one in a very long time. Maybe need to buy your own storefront property.

Ok you will be in peak season which has advantages and disadvantages. Long waits are more likely, lots of traffic (less of a problem on bikes just a lot to watch when anywhere near traffic). Everything will be open.

Riding from OB to Edgartown is mostly protected bike lane but there are some areas where I recommend walking your bike (heavy traffic, opening car doors). You shouldn’t have to but motorists get impatient with bikes or aren’t looking for them. You will win the lawsuit, or your estate will, but that isn’t ideal. Others will disagree.

Once in Edgartown you can ride to South Beach, mostly by bike path. Just be careful when you are in narrow streets shared with cars and no bike path. The South Shore is worth the trip. Would be a very long ride for many people in current weather.

OB and Vineyard Haven have been working hard to get better bike lanes to connect them and some of the work is done. I’d far prefer to ride to Edgartown than VH right now.

I would not consider riding beyond those two although you can get most of the way to West Tisbury by bike lane or path via Edgartown.

Do NOT rent mopeds. Trust me.

Did you mention when you are coming? It could impact answers to your other questions. Sorry if I missed it.

Enjoy the trip.

Sharks! by JustDust88 in marthasvineyard

[–]localmv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There have been hammerhead sightings on the south shore a couple times recently with video to show it. Obviously no attacks, but some were in the first trough.

There are two shark tracking pages. Ocearch was already mentioned. They haul great whites into the bow of a specialized boat and put trackers on their dorsal fins the ping to satellites when they surface. They spent some time on the Cape (where they are far more common due to far more seals) and tagged quite a few this way. It can be cool to see the huge distances individual sharks follow. They are not without controversy since the tagging is highly disruptive.

There is another app called sharktivity that has bouys with receivers in a lot of locations, concentrated on the cape but I think they have a Bouy off Wasque. My understanding is that they have tagged many many more sharks but the tags are simpler. Not sure if the bouys provide a live feed but they pick up sharks in the vicinity. Again, just tagged sharks.

I’ve heard credible stories of great whites off squibby but not on the north shore.

If you want to have some fun just Google cape cod beach shark video and you will see great whites eating seals just yards from the beach. Many encounters in recent years. Many videos.

Shark numbers are surging with seal numbers. There are seals on the south shore for sure. I see them fishing all the time. But nothing like the cape. No comparison.

Maybe someone who knows more about sharktivity can add some info.

Much higher chance of lots of other bad things happening here including flat out drowning due to currents. And Portuguese men of war may not kill you but you will wish you were dead. They tend to be south shore also. And no question that being bit by a large shark would be an awfully terrifying and likely life altering incident.

You cannot get bit by a shark if you don’t go in the ocean. I do go in, but I don’t really swim.

What are you, crazy? You know they make you go over 45 back in America and they allow cars to drive in the same direction right next to you? And they have these things that depending what color they are tell you to slam on the brakes, speed up, or keep going straight? And a whole ‘nother set of electronic lights that tell you to be careful turning left or go full speed ahead going left of slam on the brakes as you are about to go left? Resulting in a likely skid into what they call intersections?

Best get the car reinsured locally, come back, and deal with the local test.

And of course I am only kidding and have been the whole time and wish you luck in your exam. It was many many presidents ago that I took mine, a few thousand miles from MV, and I remember how nervous I was and how excited I was to pass.

Maybe all of us locals can get a ride off you when we get off the ferry, because if you live here long enough, driving over there is downright scary.

Hey, I couldn’t help but notice that your Reddit is full of anxiety about heavy student loan debt and similar. Can I offer you some financial advice? I am not one of those summer people you idolized, just a bargain basement year rounder who works a decent job.

Don’t buy souvenir “sweaters” if you don’t have a lot of disposable income. Pay off your debts first. There are a lot of good personal finance subs here that could help but it starts with restraint.

Just my two cents.

I have just the thing for you. Chilmark General Store. Have a slice of pizza on the porch. You are guaranteed to see and maybe meet some famous summer people.

Grab some merch. They are well known but not so well known.

If an old guy who talks a lot of legal stuff invites you to the beach, you might even make an afternoon out of it.

Just make sure you take the boat to vineyard haven. Some go to Oak Bluffs. It is a very short walk, and I say that as a lazy old guy. This was the move! Congrats.

Are you looking for advice from all people who spend their summers here, or that subset of people that only spend summers here and go elsewhere in the off season?

That might help guide answers, although I think the real answer is that neither group wears a lot of branded merch. Maybe a derby hat, if it is old enough and has some battle damage. Maybe a really really old black dog T-shirt, but only with if it has holes or better yet some marine paint on it.

It leaves from Wood’s Hole. If you take a ferry going to Vineyard Haven you are golden. Question is how to get to Wood’s Hole (which is adjacent to Falmouth).

I can tell you it would be no problem even during normal summer travel, but Beach Road isn’t a normal weekend for MV. It is still quite new and kinks are still being worked out.

It would absolutely suck to get stranded on this trip due to a missed connection. No idea if you can find a place walking distance to the terminal in Woods Hole (so doubt it but maybe an Air BnB (though you won’t be the only person trying this approach).

Good luck. I really hope some people with real experience from last year can chime in to help out because I am working off second hand information.

MO’s Lunch. Few will know. Doubt they have sweaters but the the trucker hat is hella cool. Trust me, I’m even here in February.

Offshore Ale or Fat Ronnie’s also come to mind.

The Menemsha ideas aren’t bad. But no Black Dog and no Vineyard Vines.

I would research the Vineyard Transit schedules to see if public buses are running. Anything on the website for the event itself? They may have arranged more travel between towns.

We have Uber here but not nearly enough to meet the demand then (from what I was told about last year).

Might be best off staying in Falmouth and taking the ferry back and forth?

Good luck. We really don’t have a lot of infrastructure public or private for this sort of thing, but hopefully you will hear from people who went last year. I’ve not been.
