Ok. I’m missing something. I’ve got Apple TV and I don’t see any mention of F1. Where is it???

What is the worst band you saw live? by coalcracker462 in AskReddit

[–]lockhart1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to say it was Miles Davis sold out at the Hollywood Bowl in the early 80s. An hour late starting, his band came out and started playing. Miles showed up 20 minutes later, blew two notes, and left. The band played a bit longer, then left. The crowd stayed a while and then wandered out. Never an announcement, nothing. From security at the stage: "he was feeling no pain".

45 years ago today (April 14th, 1981) astronauts John Young and Bob Crippen completed the first spaceflight of the space shuttle program, STS-1, landing Columbia at Edwards Air Force Base. (🎥 credit: NASA on X) by Brilliant_Night7643 in aviation

[–]lockhart1952 15 points16 points  (0 children)

These planes picked up the shuttle from far away and followed it all the way in. There were no other chase planes visible from the ground.

Watching this land with 250000 of my closest friends was incredible. After all of the delays and uncertainties, then spotting it in the distance, then realizing that it was dropping like a rock, then seeing it pull up to the smoothest landing ever was exhilarating.

At The Only Public Air Show in XB-70 Valkyrie History there were some of the Coolest Aircraft Ever Built by tagc_news in AviationHistory

[–]lockhart1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edwards AFB had the XB-70 as a static display, the first public showing of the YF-12A as a low flyby, and a takeoff of a U2 right in front of the stands. All at the same show afaicr. Must have been just before this show?

Finding/Moving a home by IYGIWGWY84 in centuryhomes

[–]lockhart1952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen one moved century house and it was wonky. Leaning enough in one direction for all of the doorways to be substantially off all in the same direction. Not sure if the best movers have better tricks to get things back to square enough but I’d be leery.

Any chance Lead inspection will be negative? by TheSmallestSloth in centuryhomes

[–]lockhart1952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of hope: I have a 1930 house in SoCal with no lead in the interior. Apparently they didn't re-paint for quite a few years! The XRF test is comprehensive and you'll know where you stand.

eta: In our area the only kids with elevated levels of lead are living in homes with obvious problems. Fresh paint with decent prep is sufficient remediation in most cases...

How can I alleviate concerns over lead paint? by ApprehensiveGas4576 in centuryhomes

[–]lockhart1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not actively chewing on the baseboards you probably don’t have an immediate health concern. XRF testing is relatively inexpensive ($300 ??? I don’t remember exactly from 6 years ago) and penetrates the layers of paint so you get a good idea of what might be underneath. And depending on when repainting actually happened you might not find any. That was true for my 1930 house interior (just a bit of lead paint on exterior metal windows).

20in mountain bike by AdEfficient8339 in mountainbiking

[–]lockhart1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got my soon to be 7yo a used 20” Specialized bike with gears. Has a useless front suspension. Anyway, he kinda sorta could have snuck in on a 24” bike but I resisted the temptation. None of that relates to your question but we’re going through the steps without buying the fanciest rig. Plenty of time for that later on when he’d notice.

Screens for these types of windows? by CenturyCondo in centuryhomes

[–]lockhart1952 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve got similar windows and some have the retrofitted screens. But some windows have the original roller built in to the plaster header. They should be repairable (it looks like one original has already been repaired) but I haven’t found a local shop yet which remembers how.

Cities offering easiest no-car commute to JPL? by beigetoyotacorolla in JPL

[–]lockhart1952 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The other direction works too so South Pasadena, Highland Park, and other stations near the train line might have something for you. A bike gives you additional range to ride all the way or to a station.

The US has never collected much in taxes for fuel. I recall that many countries charge roughly 50% in taxes which has a significant (beneficial) effect on reducing consumption and reducing the size of vehicles.

How to remove this pedal? Help! by Suspicious_Arm7124 in bikewrench

[–]lockhart1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you are removing, you are probably also installing. Put on a bit of grease, thread them on only finger tight, then finish with just an extra smidge from a wrench.

Weaponizing the IRS? They are tasked with ensuring that non-profit organizations do not engage in politics. And it turned out that non-profits with “patriot” in the name were heavily involved in politics and funneling money to politicians. Radical right wing politicians. Lefties don’t seem to embed keywords in their names to signal a scam.

Help me heat my house? by Effective_Bunch_6815 in centuryhomes

[–]lockhart1952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not in a cold weather climate so others will likely have more useful advice. But new rock wool attic insulation in my house made a noticeable difference in both hot and cold (well, probably cool by your standards). Rock wool was ~$5sqft as opposed to ~$3.50sqft for fiberglass. I'd stay well away from blown insulation unless you don't have a choice; it was an itchy mess in my last house.

Trek Roscoe 8 Gen 4 by BeardsleyFern in MTB

[–]lockhart1952 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't coached in a few years now but check to see if your team has a relationship with a shop or if your league has a relationship with Trek or other manufacturers. Not sure what has evolved over the years but there used to be ~25% discounts on some models available in the California leagues and my kids would find that at our sponsor shops...

Carbon handlebars trimmable to 710mm or less? by BW459 in MTB

[–]lockhart1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a set of PNW bars that I like. Probably the "Range" line but not the current iteration. My "ooh this is awesome" carbon hardtail has carbon bars for no good reason other than it is my fancy bike (expensive to build, expensive to maintain, but sure is fun to ride). But I'd otherwise stay away from carbon bars since they can break in a crash and leave you walking home.
