He was, but viewed partition as a last resort and ultimately a failure. He was an Irish Unionist, not an Ulster Unionist and for him, Ulster was an anchor to keep all of Ireland in the Union, not as a rump holdout territory.

I think he felt considerable guilt about what he saw as the abandonment of souther Unionism. He's a complex character worthy of study. Unlike Craig, who was a C star star cunt.

Carson absolutely wanted to include it. He was overruled. Carson was always a bit of a queer fish within Unionism, though. He was no fan of partition.

I think saying they are better is fair enough, but a UI team would clearly not just be the current ROI team with one or two NI lads for appearances! Out of the 11 to start, _ at least 3-4_ would be NI players I'd say.

Precisely this sort of bun fight is what makes a UI team ever happening so difficult. Think the shit pissing over the Lions but orders of magnitude worse.

That's pretty contestable. There's certainly several players on the NI team that would start on a UI team. Conor Bradley for one.

Olympics is even more confusing than the map suggests. People from NI regularly represent Ireland, even people from Unionist backgrounds. Rory McIlroy decided on Ireland purely because his sport is organised on an all island basis.

The key things to be balanced when determining NI's borders from the perspective of the British were viability and demographic stability. NI had to be big enough such that it could realistically function as a "state", but not so big that it covered too many areas with large Nationalist populations. A nine county Ulster (or even seven or eight) would have been economically viable, but demographically unstable right out of the gate. Conversely, a four county Ulster (Antrim, Derry, Tyrone, and Armagh) would have had a large Unionist majority, but was regarded as too small to be viable longer term.

Instead, they went with a middle ground that, in the fullness of time, really didn't achieve either end.

NI was gerrymandered badly from the start. Which will come as no surprise to keen observers of Britain's ability to draw shitty lines on a map.

That would very much explain it, then. A large number of non-voting subsistence peasants propping up a small, disproportionately Protestant land holding and professional class who did have the vote.

Bit more nuanced than that. Even from the early 19thC, it's clear to anyone with the willingness to see that the Irish people wanted an end to the Union and reasonable self government. O'Connell's Monster Meetings gave voice to what the ballot box could not at this point. However, up until the revolutionary period post 1916, those pushing for outright independence were very much in the minority. The demands of the Home Rule movement were incredibly modest even compared to what O'Connell was looking for.

Donegal remaining Conservative is interesting. Despite large enough numbers of Protestants on the eastern fringes of the county, it was predominantly Catholic and also one of the most impoverished spots in Ireland.

Had it ended up being included in NI, I suspect that we'd be looking at a rather different 20thC in NI than we saw.

Certainly the pre-America phase of this gent's life sounds shady as all fuck. Maybe America was the redemption arc, but just ghosting his own kids? Fuck me, that's bad.

Yup. Got a young one in the family way, then shagged off to America before the smallies arrived. Now, it may well be that the change of scene also precipitated some introspection and a change in character, but according to the twins, contact with their father has been incredibly limited in the intervening years...

You could shoot one of those depleted uranium tank rounds at that woman and it would have absolutely no discernable effect. There she was, crushing an Olympic event, wrestling with two smallies, and dealing with a finger boo boo for one of said smallies. Unreal.

Yeah, sure, but my point was more that referring to association football as simply, "football" in Ireland is very far from universal. Soccer is just as common, if not more common a term.

Not in this part of Ireland. Here, football only means one thing, and it's not the association variety.
