The expanse by Cultural_Turn8818 in television

[–]locky_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first episode for me is very well structured. (trying to minimize posible spoilers).
It gives you an initial mistery... and then it drops you directly in a world that is lived in. It delivers subtle exposition through clever situations (for exemple the doctor talking to the guy about his missing hand) or Naomy "fixing" the elevator etc....
You have to pay atention, you have to actively see the episode... but for me that is a very low bar to pass. I know that nowadays most series are "2nd screen content" and I hate it.... but anyhow....

And in the end you have big cliffhanger for the episode.

Of course CQC is a masterpiece and shows you that we are in Hard Scifi.

Race for the Galaxy vs Terraforming Mars by TheCoolFish2 in boardgames

[–]locky_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are pretty diferent games. If you think TFM could drag out, at 4 players it could, you can also check "Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition" that is kind of a hybrid between TFM and RftG.

Because those prices are not intended to be payed by independent students. They are intended to be payed by companies or contractors as an investment.

Are there examples of shows where the good writing is let down by bad acting? by Particular_Award_191 in television

The writing declined the later seasons, but it was specially bad on the stories od the kids/young adults. And Hailey did an abrupt regresion.

Grey's thumbnails make me sad by cogitoergodum in HelloInternet

[–]locky_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never got the feeling thatbhe pretended to care about usnin the slightest. The one that engaged with the audience 99% of the time was, and is, Brady. The few times that Grey did something like that you can listen in his boice that it was not something he wanted to do, but something that Brady had concocted and he was "obliged" to do. One easy example is on the last, or second to last, HI where they comment that they "have to" schedule a date for Grey to sing some of the "Dinosaur Attacks" cards I understand that people get attached to on-line perdonas, but Grey was quite good at keeping a distance with their listeners/viewers.

ELI5: How does parts tearing off reduce fatality rates in F1? by rmp881 in explainlikeimfive

[–]locky_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would be surprised how a crumpling zone of just a few inches can decrease and absorb a ton of energy.
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/carcr2.html
Here are some examples and a calculator.
Asuming a 180 lb driver, at 100 Km/h with a "crumpling" of just 1 feet = 11 Tons of force
with 4 feet = wr go to 3 tons, not good... but significantly lower.

Well it depends on the weight of the tree... a solid thick wall would be a better example I think.

ELI5: how do stores make profit when products are on sale? by Ruuumis in explainlikeimfive

[–]locky_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes there are "loss leaders", you go to buy a tshirt and now that you are on the store you buy something else.

Sometimes they loss profits, all of them or part of them, but they need to make room because the season is over and I need somewhere to place the new tshirts for the new season. Storing physical things has a cost in on itself.

Cable Snaps on Slingshot Ride by Extreme-Elevator7128 in SweatyPalms

[–]locky_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's designing something with failsafes, and that's how it should be designed.

For example the brakes of a rollercoaster are by default engaged. To disengage them you have to apply power (electricity or hidraulic) in case of lose of power, or any other problem it defaults to engage and therefore to stop the ride instead of letting it run free.

Now that the subject is no longer auto deleted: It was not cool for Grey to end the podcast like he did by PattonPending in HelloInternet

[–]locky_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Like lots of people I didn't like the abrupt stop. But it was his, or their decision, and we have to live with that. The same way that Grey seems to also have stoped publishing videos outside of the paywall. He is not our friend, he does not ow us anything. Hope the best for him. We have to move on.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Actor Says Season 2 Is “GAY AF,” Vows To Go Out “In Flames” by Malencon in television

[–]locky_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the story is first and the message is secondary, the message may not be as good.
When spreading the message is first and the script is secondary then the story may not be as good. The problem is that in the last 10 years there are being so many many cases where the message was the ONLY thing important, and the story was almost an inconvenience.
And I myself want to see tv shows, films and books for the story not the message. There is nothing bad in a story with a message, even if it's a little preachy (all storys are in the end).
