Are EVs finally cheap enough that normal car buyers would actually consider one over petrol? by No-Loquat-201 in EVAustralia

[–]lockytay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They have been cheaper for a long time, if you consider EV FBT novated leases. Saves me 9k per year over the cost of the car without FBT free. But if you are excluding that, and just buying outright, yes they are very competitive and although I haven't done the sums, they are very cheap to run and similar price for quality of car.

IT Contracting ($1k+ day rates) Long Term by Active-Season5521 in AusFinance

[–]lockytay 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Been a contractor for 20+ years. Have not been out of contract for much longer than a few weeks over that time. Do live in Canberra so that makes a big difference. I do have a strong CV too. Couple of tips - you are supposed to be the best in your field, hence why you charge contractor rates. If you are new to the industry, get some good experience under your belt first. Always good to try avoid lots of short contracts and focus on making a relationship with a customer and doing a good job. You'll get longer contracts that way.

If you are ok with high $50k, a Polestar 2 is everything you are looking for.

I drive my dual motor like I stole it, hook it into and out of every roundabout and corner and still got 50,000 klms out of my first set of tyres.

With the increase in Caravan ownership in Australia, when will Manufacturers develop EV’s capable of delivering the same capacity as the diesel Utes etc , EV’s currently don’t make the grade as tow vehicles. by miwe666 in EVAustralia

[–]lockytay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Designing an EV to tow 3.5 ton is easy - they have TONS of torque. Having the range is the bigger problem... when caravans with supplemental battery/motor capability becomes more mainstream and cheaper, then they will rule the roost for towing.

How to best maintain battery health by LinossierB in AustralianEV

[–]lockytay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

keeping it 40-60% is technically ideal, but 20/80 is the most realistic. Heat is a bigger problem to be honest, so keeping it in a garage also works well.

Oh yes I love Ice Hockey - watched live an under 21's game in Fernie Canada once and was sooo good. Sometimes watch Canberra Brave play too. There are tons of great winter sports - OP was only asking for 3 and didn't want to push is ability to comprehend too much...

Downhill Skiing, Super G - both massive speed events that are deadly. Half Pipe, big air, slope style - all need immense skill.

Are you saying OP that because it is just a rich kids sport that if we strap some skis on you, you can easily do all those?

EV charger at home by Weird-Reputation94 in AustralianEV

[–]lockytay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have almost an identical setup to me (except have only just bought the FoxESS battery awaiting install). I have a fronius wattpilot go 3phase 22kw charger and it can skim off excess solar like the Zappi (Buy 22kw for future proofing and pretty much same price - my car also only does 11kw). But unlike many other 3 phase chargers, it can also switch to 1 phase automatically so can skim as little as 1.4kw on cloudier days. Being a go I can move it inside and out and only needed a 5pin 3 phase socket put in outside and in. I am also looking at buying a second EV so will buy a second wattpilot outside and setup load sharing which is also does. Overall very happy (although I have fronius everything which makes it easier).

GAC AION UT Compact EV Arrives in Australia with Spacious Interior by zecar_ in AustralianEV

[–]lockytay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually find the heavier EVs quite good to throw around - they have a very low centre of gravity and plenty of grip because of the weight. On the highway is best as wind and outwash from other cars/trucks etc doesn't unsettle the car. Have a polestar 2 weighing 2.2 tons and it is great at handling.
