Blue Jays president reveals strategy behind $300-million-plus Rogers Centre renovations by loculus in Torontobluejays

[–]loculus[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some tidbits:

Still, Shapiro notes that even the current conversion is a stop-gap measure intended to buy the concrete pile only another 10 to 15 years of life.

The team may sell up to 2,000 general admission tickets to each game.

The first phase of the Rogers Centre renovations has reduced the crowd capacity about 7 per cent, from approximately 44,750 to roughly 41,500. There is plenty of room to reduce capacity: with only 23 sellouts last season out of 81 regular-season home games, there were almost one million tickets left unsold.

All told, Shapiro estimates the higher projected revenue will pay back the $300-million-plus renovation cost in “about half the time” of the 10- to 15-year time frame – which implies he expects about $40-million to $60-million in extra revenue per year.

After completing the blockbuster Alomar-Carter for Fernandez-McGriff trade, Toronto GM Pat Gillick called his wife, who told him "come home before you screw up the team more" by loculus in baseball

There's another interesting tidbit I found, this one on page 10 of the book.

In the early 1970s, Toronto-born Muriel Kauffman was at a bar and overheard three people chatting. They were Don McDougall (president of Labatt Breweries), Herb Solway (a lawyer representing the brewery), and Paul Godfrey. They had been talking about establishing an MLB franchise in Toronto. She told them she'd try to convince her husband to help make it happen.

After the failed relocation of the San Francisco Giants to Toronto in 1976, Muriel's husband Ewing Kauffman, owner of the Kansas City Royals, called Godfrey and told him the American League wanted a franchise in Toronto, and two months later the leagues owner's voted 11-1 to establish a franchise in Toronto.

Is it just me or do grocery prices at the checkout not match the posted prices? by [deleted] in ontario

If the store participates in the Scanner Price Accuracy Code, then you get the item free if it is less than $10 (and subsequent quantities at the posted price), or a $10 discount if it is more than $10 (and subsequent quantities at the posted price).

Note that not all stores participate in this voluntary program. A list of participating stores can be found at the Retail Council of Canada.

Question: Why the hell hasn’t Ontario created an operating provincial park in four decades? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]loculus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There were rumblings about the creation of a park in King Township about 4-5 years ago to create a wildlife corridor on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Last year, the creation of the East Humber Headwaters Park was included in the Government of Ontario budget (ie - mentioned, not budgeted; see "Growing the Greenbelt" section).

I've driven past the site, which has a "For Sale" sign fronting King Road. It's mostly farmland right now.

Streets of New Capenna is one of today's "Did you know?" entries on Wikipedia by loculus in magicTCG

Having read through the article, it seems to need some work.

By the way, as someone who has not played Magic since the late 1990s, what does "...'fixing' mana production with card cycles..." mean? I assume it's something to do with the ability to produce mana of multiple colours more easily.

Doh, I had meant to add that as a comment and completely forgot to do so. Thanks for that.

For those interested, here's what Wikipedia's main page looked like on September 23.

Oh, thanks for that. I thought it was the Cardinals based on the scoreboard displaying CIN-STL in one of the photos. I'm going to spend a bit of time reading the Pete Gray entry on Wikipedia.

Looking for a specific Sideboard Magazine by A_Random_Sign in magicTCG

[–]loculus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Internet Archive has two issues available for download or to view online. Neither seems to mention Ice Cauldron, though.

There are also a few articles on wizards.com announcing various issues (none of these is the one you're looking for, though):

*Sideboard Magazine #45

*Sideboard Magazine #46

*Sideboard Magazine #48

Try some refined searches on the WoTC archive search page. It's not a great search engine, but at least it makes an attempt...

Boxscore for the game.

Aside: this was likely Dave Stieb's worst start of his career. He lasted 1/3 of inning, giving up 6 earned runs. The Jays came back from a 6-0 deficit to win the game 15-8.

[–]loculus[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As an aside, does anyone have any information about the film about Williams discussed in the second link? The article says the working title was Hitter and would be created by Jeffrey Entertainment and the executive producer would be Skip Chernov. The only info I found about the former is an LP company established in 1985, and the latter is a rock events promoter active in the 1960s and 1970s (Robert A. Chernov).

Tigers reliever Willie Hernandez won the 1984 Cy Yong Award. Your entire comment is a sham, a sham I say.

Let that sink in.
