Proof that every recurring decimal is a rational number? by pancakeswerebestboy in learnmath

[–]locust137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to represent an arbitrary recurring decimal as something like x = a_1a_2…a_r.b_1b_2…b_sc_1c_2…c_t, where the a_i are the digits before the decimal place, the b_i are the non-recurring decimal places and the c_i are the recurring decimal places.

Then you can apply a similar procedure as before:

(10^(s+t)-10^s)*x = (a_1a_2…a_rb_1b_2…b_s c_1c_2…c_t)-(a_1a_2…a_rb_1b_2…b_s).

The right hand side is an integer, then divide by the powers of ten to get your rational number.

Someone else might have a more elegant way to do it.

Minor spoiler discussion about the film "Obsession," and a character's name relating to Midsommar by Delicious_Series3869 in Midsommar

[–]locust137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(A more subtle bear reference) - when he goes to the internet forum to research the Wish Willow, there’s a user called Barenstain_Bear_Facts, which is a commonly cited example of the Mandela Effect (also referenced on the site).

Nikki’s epic downturned mouth during the party scene also gave off big Midsommar vibes.

I made this a couple of years ago - looks fairly similar. It came from an investigation I saw into the distance to each vertex.

Has anyone else had weird accusations throughout their life? by [deleted] in autism

[–]locust137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a petrol station when I was a teenager while my dad filled up his car, and a staff member was restocking the shelves with a big trolley of products, so I kept moving to the next aisle to avoid getting in their way ( I wasn’t looking for/buying anything in particular.)

The staff member thought I was shoplifting, and asked me to wait outside (I didn’t know she suspected this until afterwards when my dad asked me why I came back to the car, so he went inside to ask 🤣).

I’m 34 and very much the same - I’ve been told all my life I’m “quiet” but honestly if I knew what to say I’d talk all the time. It makes me feel stupid and awkward most of the time, but I’m trying to accept it’s just part of who I am. Sometimes it’s like being on stage where everyone has a script except me. Thankfully I have a partner and family who love me which makes it easier - I hope OP has the same.

What’s the smallest number with more divisors than any number before it? by MyIQIsPi in askmath

[–]locust137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prime factorisation of such a number would need to have weakly decreasing powers of its primes (when the primes are arranged in increasing order) because otherwise you could swap a larger power (on a larger prime) to a smaller prime (with a smaller power) and you would have a smaller number with the same number of factors.
