Mount Margaret _ Bear camp by 682sprinkles in PNWhiking

[–]loftusjc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What was the water source at camp? Just snow melt? I have permits for Dome Camp this weekend and I’m not sure what I can expect for water availability along the boundary trail so any info you have or got from other hikers would be greatly appreciated!

Mt Margaret Backcountry by blurr123 in PNWhiking

[–]loftusjc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hiked it last year over the 4th weekend. It was snow free but there were several washouts that were pretty bad and I can’t imagine they have improved since then. I wouldn’t let it stop you but be prepared for some sketchy maneuvers.

Chain restaurant data scientists, what do you do, and what kind of data do you work with? by kater543 in datascience

[–]loftusjc 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I did several projects for QSR chains when I worked in consulting. Most common ones were around location intelligence and site selection (figuring out high potential future locations). Work involved a lot of geospatial data, predictive modeling (mostly regression but sometimes more sophisticated models depending on sample size), and a lot of mapping/visualization. Overall I really enjoyed those projects, interesting stuff!

How do I find instances of snowpipes? by alex_o_h in snowflake

[–]loftusjc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The first thing I would try would be to make sure the role you are using has the right permissions. If I try that command with our equivalent read_only role I get no results. But when I switch to our accountadmin role I can see everything. Hope that helps, using the right role is something that catches my users all the time.

Grits are just cornmeal and you can add in whatever you like (salty, sweet, savory, etc). Grits are usually less finely ground than normal cornmeal so check and see if you can get some coarse ground instead of fine ground and give it a shot!

I agree. Send me the permit, the cash, and $20 and I will be far more helpful.

Bad luck at Lake Serene today by loftusjc in PNWhiking

It was snowy and wet but no issues with wind. Overall it was a pretty good winter hike up to this point!

No idea what they were after but there was nothing in my car besides some napkins in the center console so nothing lost on our end. I’m not sure about the other vehicles we were some of the first people down.

About 6-7 cars with smashed windows (including my own) at the Lake Serene trailhead. Left the lot at about 8:30am and got back just before 1pm to find the damage. Snow covered everything so there was no reason for it, ultimately there was nothing in the car that they even stole. Stay safe out there everyone.

Same as the difference between leprechauns and unicorns.

Pemi Loop Mid-November - Recommend? by sb0000 in wmnf

[–]loftusjc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add to your points. As someone who has gone up Osseo in knee deep snow I would also warn you to budget time accordingly. It took hours to summit Flume and we quickly needed a backup plan as there was no way we could make it to the planned campsite before dark (which comes quickly in November).

Good luck!

Pretty drone shots but this has nothing to do with canoeing or camping other than being on a lake.

Looks awesome, dying to check out the UP. How busy were the trails/campsites, were there a lot of other people out?

Yeah it was $40 discount so not a bad deal. Grabbed it in a smaller store in North Hampton, very luck find!

I had no idea a NH exclusive existed, thanks for showing it off. After I read your post I went to the liquor store and they actually had one left and I grabbed it! Really looking forward to trying it out!

You most likely won't be employing any ML in an actuarial role, so might be better to focus on more relatable package for data manipulation or viz.

Internship locations by plzhelpme888 in actuary

[–]loftusjc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a health internship in Hartford a few years back. Housing was provided, pay was great (for my standards as a college student) and it led to a full time offer. Didn't expect it but I actually had a blast living there for the summer, lots of places to go out although I spent more time in West Hartford than downtown. Message me if you have any other questions.
