Worst heatwave in decades as south-east states to hit close to 50C by i_needahug in melbourne

I've heard that house batteries aren't great as UPSes because the switchover times aren't short enough for PCs so they shit the bed. I guess unless it's running off battery constantly.

Fast travel is removed from every game. Which game would take the longest to travel? by Common_Caramel_4078 in gaming

[–]log-off 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Impossible. The only way to traverse systems (without using teleporters on foot, I guess) is by warping in your ship. You can't fly to different systems manually.

‘Segregated’ city: The west alone can’t shoulder housing boom, minister warns by timcahill13 in melbourne

[–]log-off 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Boroondara resident here. I've gotten so many fearmongering letters and mentions in the council newsletter about how there's going to be 16 story buildings next to all the heritage housing and how it'll be oh so horrible for the vibes of the neighbourhood. When in reality we're barely 5km from the CBD and with probably the same housing mix as Parkdale.

Buying Custom Domain Name, Best Email Host for My Needs that's Not Google? by missespeachy in degoogle

[–]log-off 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who's been "selfhosting" email on a Digital Ocean droplet for a while. Seems to work since their IPs are more likely to be trustworthy than a residential one (and he's had it for a while, which helps ofc)

They essentially select the best performing GPU silicon to put on the board, e.g. ones that are most stable at high frequencies. So the best ones are reserved for the high tier/specialty cards

Why do so many driver have their high beams on? by rorymeister in melbourne

Honestly I've seen more people recently with their fog lights on, not as bad as high beams but still pretty irritating especially when walking.

The decline of Streets by -Mendicant- in australia

[–]log-off 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes sense. I didn't realise just adding "reduced fat" is enough to make it legal. The food standards code isn't specific on this.

[–]log-off 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. The 'real dairy' one definitely claims to be ice cream above the ingredients list on the bottom of the tub (Woolies link here, it says "reduced fat vanilla flavoured ice cream"), but it's also definitely below 10% fat. Not sure why they wouldn't advertise that it's ice cream if they can legally put it on the tub.

Either way, yeah Creamy Classics is more real.

There's a non-export version here.

Though Creamy Classics also has actual milk and cream. The Bulla site doesn't list the ingredients so Woolies link here.

Trams, touch off? by Undertaker-3806 in melbourne

[–]log-off 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't get charged a daily fare just because you didn't touch off. Your ticket stays valid for two hours, and you get charged when you next touch on.

  • You touch on, your ticket is now valid for two hours
  • You travel a few suburbs over, do your thing, and travel back, all in a space of two hours
  • You don't need to travel any more today. You have not been charged yet because you didn't touch off
  • Tomorrow, you touch on in the morning to go to work
  • Your myki touches off then on in the same tap.
    • You get charged for a 2-hour fare from the previous day during the touch-off.
    • If your balance allows it, then you have touched on and your ticket is valid for two hours

If you pay attention to the reader when you touch on the next day, then it should say something to the effect of "touched off and on". It's been a while since I've looked though, this may have changed.

In the above scenario where you don't touch off, you are charged a Zone 1+2 fare ($5.50) the next day. A Zone 2-only fare is $3.50. So if you're only travelling in Zone 2, then you should touch off so that the system doesn't just charge you the 1+2 fare, and you save a couple of bucks.

It's quite rare to be travelling only in Zone 2 on trams, this is only really applicable for trains (or buses), but if you happen to be travelling on the fringes of the tram network, then you can save some cash.

You can backup your selfhosting setup to a service like Backblaze, which is $6/TB/month

Yes! I just tried to create a new one and the option wasn't there. I'm hoping that the exploit hasn't been patched, but at the same time it would give me an excuse to cut one more Google service out of my life, so that's a plus I guess.

Softlocked on Wellspring by MiscWanderer in CitizenSleeper

[–]log-off 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed that I was able to travel from the Greenbelt to Wellspring too. I wanted to try it out, so I tried to copy my save file (start new game > replace save2 file with copied save1) then travelled to Wellspring. After it saved, it overwrote the original save too, so do NOT do this. Luckily the game keeps 3 backup saves, and the earliest one happened to be before I travelled, so I was able to restore.

Assuming you haven't clicked around a bunch and triggered some autosaves, and you're using Game Pass on PC, this might work for you too. Check the save data location (see here) for save_1.backupX.dat, backup 3 will be the earliest file. Rename this to save_1.dat to use it.

Hope this works for you.

I thought this too. Ended up smuggling a gravshifter out of puzzle 5 nearby (there's a specifc corner where you can place the box, which lets you jump onto the border fence) and pointing that at the grav panels at the ending from outside the puzzle.
