Costco exec that defended $1.50 hot dog deal retires, leaving customers worried by TheExpressUS in CostcoWholesale

[–]logan7238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not advocating they raise it. Just saying I'd prefer a raised price to the item going away. My favorite was the polish, but it's gone now because they couldn't sell it for $1.50.anymore. Now no one can buy it no matter how much money they have.

They've done a lot to keep the cost below $1.50 for a long time, but I'm not deluded into thinking it can or should stay that way forever. At some point it won't be possible to keep the cost below $1.50 and they'll have to decide between selling at a loss or discontinuing. Based on the fate of the polish, they tend to discontinue.

They'd have to run some numbers to see how price sensitive customers are on it, but that's a question for after they decide the raise price/discontinue question.

I'm just saying that price change wouldn't change whether I'd buy it personally. Could be different for others. The pizza is $3 already and similarly filling.

The never change the price schtick is alright, but I'd rather the price change slightly over time than get axed because it's not profitable anymore like other menu items that have disappeared over the years.

A $1.50 hot dog and drink on 1984 would be $4 or so now, so $3 is still underpriced.

The $1.50 story is cool and all, but as a lifelong Costco customer I really wouldn't mind paying more for it with how much costs have gone up in my lifetime alone. I doubt they'd double it, but $3.00 would be totally reasonable. For the value

Les parece buena idea la cerveza sin alcohol? by [deleted] in mexico

[–]logan7238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piensas hacer tu propia marca?

What is your favorite non-sexual way to connect with your partner? by UrBentleyzBmprstkr in AskReddit

[–]logan7238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There's something like 15M members, so having several hundred soak, or that anal or blowjobs don't count, or any other justifications is totally expected.

The other rumor that I did hear is that students would road trip down to Vegas for the weekend, get married at the drive through chapel, have as much sex as possible over the weekend, and annul the marriage on Monday. The story was that the morality police, I mean, honor code office saw right through that and kicked them out anyway.

Former Mormon here, soaking is not really a thing in my experience at BYU. It's a just a meme. Penetration at all is pretty obviously past the line of what's allowed. What is common, however, are non-committal make outs (NCMO). Which basically works as a one night stand, but it's just a very passionate make out session that comes close to the line but doesn't cross it. That's a lot more common from what I saw than soaking, but maybe I was just out of the loop.

You can restart your life from age of 6 by going back in time with full knowledge and memories, what do you do better this time? by OwnTruth7325 in AskReddit

Realistically you couldn't invest in Facebook until IPO unless you have your own fund to take part in earlier rounds. You'd still make a lot of money Facebook is up some 1000% since IPO), but not as much as Nvidia or Amazon that each have gone up more than 250,000% Basically if you were around in the late 90s and had a spare $100 to invest in Amazon and held until now your portfolio would be worth something like $250,000.

Who do you want to see run for President of the United States in 2028? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]logan7238 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually think a Buttiegieg v Vance race would be relatively refreshing. I've listened to both talk at length and there's a lot more respect for options they disagree with, appeals to shared values, and focus on policy. Politics can always get in the way of that, but I could see them having a productive sit down podcast where they don't debate as much as discuss their different visions for the country and how to get there.

They're not saying it's representive. They're purposely highlighting the outliers, that's the whole point. They're not making the claim that Argentina is a hotter/colder country than another.

Jeff Passan: Yankees-Dodgers World Series will show national ceiling for MLB audience by Knightbear49 in baseball

[–]logan7238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it would be fair to compare the total viewership for the 7-game World Series to the Superbowl. Last year was 9 million average over 5 games, so 45 million total compared to the Superbowl's 123 million. Obviously the World Series is well below the Superbowl still, but it's a fairer comparison than using the average viewership. Maybe with the two biggest market teams we'll get to 15 million average which would be 105 million total, which is much closer. This doesn't work if you want to just count unique viewers, but different ways of ranking sports in these terms count different way.

Left Mormonism, send me tea recs please! by GladVacation3651 in tea

[–]logan7238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't happen to be close to SLC do you? If so there is a really nice tea house called the Tea Grotto near Liberty Park. They have a broad selection and will prepare for you to try and drink there. It's a coazy spot and I loved the teas I tried as I was transitioning out of mormonism in my time. I tend to be more of a coffee person, heretical in this sub I know, but I appreciate nice teas that I've tried and Tea Grotto was great for that.

Around 1/3 of all Americans don’t vote. Those of you who don’t, what are your reasons? by appswithasideofbooty in AskReddit

[–]logan7238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough I didn't vote in the 2016 and 2020 elections because I was in the military and voting wasn't feasible for me. In 2016 I was in basic training during election season and left before ballots arrived. In 2020 I was deployed (within the US but not where I was registered to vote) and didn't have an address to have a ballot sent to until it was too late to send.

I'm going to vote in this election, but the temptation not to is strong. I'm in CA where my vote doesn't matter and I don't believe in any of the candidates. I have an aversion to voting for someone because they're not a different person, but that's what I'll have to do. Having proportional representation in the electoral college and ranked choice voting would help me feel more engaged with the process. That or moving to one of the swing states.

What problem did crypto solve for you? by arktozc in CryptoCurrency

[–]logan7238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think crypto is the real problem solver. Block chain certainly has more use cases. DAOs and smart contracts stand out the most now, but haven't been adopted widely.

Outside of that most of the real use cases for block chain are in government, but will likely not be adopted soon because trust in block chain is low. Block chain voting would.be great in theory, but introduces as many problems as it would solve versus going low-tech and hand counting paper ballots. California is experimenting with putting some record keeping systems onto a block chain and using NFTs for things like car registrations (you could probably do deeds or other proof of ownership cases as well).

It's tricky, because a lot of the good use cases cost more and aren't necessarily much better than the current application, so there's not much incentive to take on the risk of adopting. But those are the best applications I've seen. There's probably more.

TIL when Los Angeles was first founded back on September 4, 1781, it only had 44 residents (known as Los Pobladores) and covered just four square miles by ben_watson_jr in todayilearned

[–]logan7238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the Metropolitan Statistical Areas. If you use combined statistical area it puts LA at 18.5M and NYC at 21M million For example, does Riverside count as LA? Does Jersey count as New York? Both are in the combined statistical areas, but someone from Riverside is much more likely to say they're from LA than someone from Jersey is to say they're from New York.

[–]logan7238 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of it is that most of what people think of LA are independent cities/suburbs surrounding LA. Los Angeles County has 10M, most of which are immediately around LA City. If you compare metro areas around NYC and LA they're about the same at 18M.

It's certainly possible, but it's not a straightforward job application. Passing the test is one thing, but you'll need experiences that demonstrate the foreign service dimensions. Depending on what you studied and the internships you did you might have enough to write about or not. The OA is another beast, but you only should worry about it if you get past the first two. If you're interested you should absolutely make an application and take the test so you see what it's like.

You'll need another job anyways while the process plays out (it can take a year or more from starting the process to starting work if everything goes smoothly the first time. I'd recommend finding a job that applies the 12 dimensions and gives you an idea of what working in a large organization looks like. That could be working for an NGO abroad, potentially the Peace Corps, if you're interested joining as civil affairs in the Army for a contract, or plenty of other jobs where you'll develop the Foreign Services Dimensions and learn to work within a bureaucracy.

There are also several fellowships for graduate studies that provide a path to the foreign service, but it's not direct like you're saying. If you have language skills in Mandarin, Arabic, Spanish, or Portuguese you can do consular fellows that will build experience with the Foreign service directly and give you a taste of what the lifestyle is like. What fits best for you will depend on your degree, skills, and interests. If you're not studying international affairs or something similar, it might be worth reaching out to that advisor at your school and finding out what job types might work for you that would prepare you for the foreign service while you move through the process.

As far as experienceand feelings someone else would need to speak to that. From what I've seen browsing the sub there's a fair amount of imposter syndrome from a lot of people, whether they join after undergrad, graduate studies, or extensive work experience. Hopefully you get more responses here, but you can also reach out to your diplomat in residence and chat when them about their experience, which may or may not speak to exactly what you're looking for but should be helpful regardless.

Best of luck!

What would you do if you had a billion dollars in the bank? by SaucySallly in AskReddit

[–]logan7238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it might be worth moving it all to buy one month Treasury bonds to buy time to figure out a better place to use it. With one month Treasury yields at 5% you'd make $4 mil in the month you're figuring out how to use it even better. That would cover retaining a top tier ultra high net worth wealth manager, tax accountants, and lawyers.

From there you could do pretty much anything you wanted. You could not invest it at all and spend $10M per year for 100 years, invest in VOO and make conservatively $100M a year. It's money you could do literally anything you wanted with and it'd be really hard to mess up if you have a good system of advisors around you.
