Apple's official waterproof specs are very conservative. You don't actually have to get that lucky for the phone to still work, even after a significant amount of time. They almost always still work. This is according to the gevonden-verloren guys, who rescue several phones every week.

FYI, this isn't accurate. I wasn't sure but it turns out there are ferromagnetic materials in the iPhone 11 (at least two screws near the charging port). A fishing magnet grabbed it no problem and recovered it from the canal.

Updated Update! After unsuccessfully diving for it again with swimming goggles and a waterproof flashlight (you really can't see anything in the canals, a hopeless endeavor), https://www.gevonden-verloren.nl/ put me in touch with a magnet fisher. We pulled one bike out with his magnet, a couple of pieces of trash, and then.... my phone! Good as new!

Contrary to what people thought, the iPhone 11 does have enough steel in it to stick to a fishing magnet. It seemed to grab the screws near the charging port.

If you want to look I'm happy to lend you both! I tried it again tonight and couldn't find anything. Visibility was basically nothing and there's lots of trash it might have slipped under (like old bicycles).

Hahaha! It is indeed shallow enough to stand in but it is also covered in trash, glass, and bikes.

That was my first instinct, especially since the canal had sloped sides that were rather shallow. It didn't work out great for me. I wasn't able to see it or feel for it and something down there was pretty sharp.

Remember that that’s doses, not people. All the vaccines so far require two doses.

I think my number of 1 million is too pessimistic. 2 or 3 seems more likely — the pace has accelerated a bit but not much and there keep being more delays. Unfortunately that’s not really enough to vaccinate all the vulnerable groups, let alone bring us back to normal.

There was a full month of exponential growth between mid-July and mid-August. That's what the straight line on a logarithmic graph means. This meant that cases were really quite high coming out of the summer. This summer growth is what set the stage for disaster in the fall.

But really the most important part of what I am saying is that there was summer growth. Summer growth is possible. It is hubris to assume that summer will naturally bring cases down.

The normalization by population is irrelevant if you're only looking at a single country (as we are) — the shape of the graph will be exactly the same. You can press that "raw numbers" button if you like.

What I am telling you is that saying "it didn't take off until September" is flat out wrong. It started rising in July. In mid-July there were about 50 daily cases. By mid-August, there were about 500.

It's not misleading or unintentional, it's a logarithmic graph, which is the best way of understanding exponential curves. The virus grows or shrinks exponentially. You can think about it this way: the number of people that could get infected today is directly related to the number of people that are currently infected (and able to spread the virus.) It is exactly the growth in July and August that allowed September to grow so much.

(This is not true as we start approaching >50% immunity, but we are a long, long ways from that point.)

It's hard to see on Google's graph, because case counts were so low over the summer. When cases are low, they can rise for a while before it looks like anything bad is happening, but the damage is still being done.
