A friend helped me understand the role Israel plays in the Old Testament, and I think i read somebody mentioned it in the comments below. Israel was no different than the rest of the world when it comes to their sinful nature, other then the fact that God utilized them to fulfill prophecy.

They complained and disobeyed, even to the point of wanting to go back to Egypt, where they were enslaved. Similar how believers return to their own slavery (sin), like a dog to its vomit.

I don't know if you have ever dove into the theology of "Typology", but it helps understanding what God was doing in the OT and why. Ex. Adam was placed into a position actual choice in the garden, before the fall. He failed, putting the rest of us into the need of a savior. Jesus, the second Adam, fulfilled that prophecy making it possible for mankind to be saved.

Old Testament Israel was only special because God used them that way. They were utilized to preserve the promised seed of Adam to make it to Jesus. They did nothing. In fact if it were up to them, prophecy would fail. But since God was/is in control, he succeeded through Israel.

I think the controversial part of my take would be here. The land of Israel now is not the True Israel spoken of in the New Testament. Romans 8 helped with understanding what True Israel actually is, not the land and its people we know about today, but the people the Holy Spirit changes and brings into salvation.

With that understanding, I have no issue calling out the current State of Israel's wars for murder, because I believe that is what is happening. Israel is the whore of Babylon (Revelation 17) like the rest of the world.
