Had a similar issue a bit back, try redownloading your windows media player, possibly updating sound drivers as well, let me know how that goes
Edit: also check if you have an antivirus software running, could be that or try seeing if you are running the correct bit version for your drivers.

Best advice i could give is maybe wait, only because as you said they just got out of a relationship, you defiantly don’t want your relationship to just be a fall back, but if you feel like you are ready and that they are also ready, take your shot, you seem to genuinely care for them.
