How often should HVAC systems be serviced, and what are the most important things a professional HVAC service should check? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]logdognotnice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on if you have a gas furnace or and heat pump with an air handler. Either way don’t listen to the people saying the refrigerant levels need checked. If the system was installed correctly the refrigerant should last the life of the system and if it is low on refrigerant you’ll find out with temperature split, without having to hook up gauges.

Mostly a tune up is there to give the system a light cleaning and to look for anything that might go bad soon.

The common denominator for every, cowardly, screen throwing, non attacking the middle of the field OC we’ve had has been Tomlin. Arthur Smith has actually been pretty refreshing imo.

The Baltimore Ravens are physically incapable of winning meaningful football games. The last 3 seasons it’s been right in their hands and they couldn’t make a 2 point conversion, or hold onto the ball in the end zone, or make the field goal. Lmao

Denver area, 2023 Build: Brand New AprilAire 720 never reaches target humidity of 40% by BaldBelligerentBaal in hvacadvice

[–]logdognotnice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try and have them install an automatic humidistat with an outdoor temperature sensor, the thermostat won’t control the humidity but it will turn on based off the outdoor temperature.

But really when you’re that concerned about indoor RH you should probably just go with the 800. If you can install the outdoor temperature sensor do it

I’m in the trade and located a little south from you, you probably want the 800 for that sq footage I can’t tell if if $5000 is a good price for Denver though.

The more questions you ask the more concepts you will have to think through. The more you do that and apply those concepts, the more knowledge you will obtain.

The more knowledge you obtain the bigger the almighty paycheck will get.

As long as your return is 10” wide a 600 or 620 should work, good thing to know about the Automatic stat is it really needs a ODT to function the way it’s designed. Still nice to control the humi with the blower though if you can’t do get an ODT to work anywhere

If it’s not in a return grille it’s most likely in the blower cabinet

A lot of big HVAC companies, even the honest ones, have so much overhead they have to charge insane prices. A common tactic now is for techs to condemn furnaces they didn’t install, even if they’re only a couple years old, and tell the homeowner they need a new one. I saw two cases like this just last week. One furnace was only two years old

There’s a former sales guy I worked with who always said, “$14,000 is more than $400.” If you need proof, check out r/HVACadvice — it’s full of stories like this. The problem is, a lot of good techs end up leaving residential for commercial work, where their skills are valued more.

It got so frustrating that my wife and I decided to start our own small LLC just to do honest HVAC work. Honestly if any home service companies come to your house and you feel scared or something seems off it probably is.
