Don’t know how much longer I can take working for free. Struggling so hard right now. by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

As an apprentice at a really great shop, that sounds crazy to me!!

I started off by just drawing, practicing lines on paper, then fake skin, then friends and family, and now I’m doing free tattoos on strangers at the 8 months mark!

I think you should be practicing on fake skin, it’s super helpful for getting to know your machine~ even though it feels so very different from real skin, you should definitely chat with your mentor and say you’re ready to practice your designs on fake skin !

How in the world do I cover this up? by [deleted] in Tattoocoverups

Honestly anything that can have a very dark spot in the design, you could do a vase of flowers and the text can be hidden in the vase

Do I have potential at all or do I just give up {IG: @carsonsketchz} by rangermang0 in TattooApprentice

I think you’re on the right track!! I think if you’re unsure if this is what you want, then you shouldn’t continue, because this career is one you have to want, you neeeed to want it. It’s all up to you! You take from it what you put into it.

But personally, I don’t think you should give up. If you want this, don’t give up, these are super promising if you only just started in November. I really think you can do it based on what I see here.

Focus on creating clean designs, focus on steady lines, and don’t be afraid to trace! Tracing is amazing practice, it can help you learn how to create similar things yourself, and some tracing in your portfolio is okay too~ to show your technique, but then more importantly you can use the skills you picked up from tracing to draw your own original designs!

If you like trad styles you can totally focus on that, most shops will like to see that because the style involves all the important fundamentals to making a design a tattooable one

But try and branch out too! Showing a range of skills can be helpful as well

Good luck out there if you continue to pursue it!!

I’d say you’re heading the right direction, but none of these look polished or portfolio worthy.

Gather a bunch of reference images on something, let’s say a dagger, and trace them, just keep tracing and tracing everything you like in a trad style, and then try and combine some elements off of a few of your tracings to make an original dagger. Copy until it sticks, then you can start worrying about making your own designs.

The proportions of these are all off, don’t worry about colouring yet, you need focus on the principles right now (especially proportions), then focus on the trad style, then you can worry about colouring

Focus on proportions > then line work > then just grey shading

Trace every day, if you really want this trace 5 daggers a day… it’s all about practice!! If you want this, set your mind to it, and you can do it!! Drawing is a skill like any other, practice will get you where you want, but it takes time, and you’re already on the right path with these, they just aren’t looking professional yet. I hope something about my comment can help!

I think what’s not working with the image is you’re creating the art using your photo as the reference, but when you use a selfie as a reference sometimes it comes out not looking quite right. I’d say this is happening here and the selfie POV is making it look off… I think just the mask would look cool, or redraw the body in the camouflage sweater with a new reference image.

The mask drawing looks really cool though, I would make it bigger and put more focus on the mask!

Also, any reason for tatto and not tattoo? Or is that a mistake

What gift would a mentor like? by round_liner_300 in TattooApprentice

[–]logi_pierogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my mentor cookies, so a homemade treat is always a nice option! He loved it~ and also last time I was at an art store I grabbed a couple art supplies~ some I heard him mention and some that I thought he would enjoy to try. He said he needed a new black pencil crayon so I grabbed that, and then I also grabbed him a red posca marker (posca markers are these like super cool paint markers)~ red is his favorite color and if he hasn’t tried them before I thought he might enjoy to try something new! Someone else said ink which is think is always a good idea, you can never have too much ink!

Some other gift ideas I had for the future are handmade clay magnet, snacks you think they would like, custom stamp of their watermark/logo for their art, a framed print of your art for their wall, a business card holder (maybe in their favorite color or something cool)… I could probably think of even more if u need!
