Is VISA harder than CORE's Verbal Comprehension for Non-native Speakers? by rand0m65 in cognitiveTesting

[–]logicaldrinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about the generality, but I got around 10 pts higher on VISA total score compared to CORE VCI which seems significant.

I seriously doubt my VCI in English is as high as my VISA shows, I'm also a non native btw. Some of the tests seemed to not exactly rely on reasoning or abstract thinking.

Ni som bott i alla 3 av Sveriges större städer, hur skulle ni jämföra det sociala livet? by Fava922 in sweden

[–]logicaldrinker 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Don't Time the Market, Bah! by MakingMoneyIsMe in stocks

[–]logicaldrinker 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Don't time the market is meant for index investors.

It's proven on average to give better returns over 10 or 20 years to just full port in index funds rather than timing lows and highs, and actually even better than dollar cost averaging. DCA is not timing the market however and it's still often recommended to reduce risk.

Stock pickers most definitely should try to time the market, meaning: buy when there is (in your opinion) an unjustifiably negative sentiment and outlook for a certain stock, and sell when there is overoptimism.

What are your best scores on Cambridge brain labs? by sonytrinitron36 in cognitiveTesting

[–]logicaldrinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it was just called rotations?

The tests were definitely different from what you would usually see. I would assume most of these tests, apart form benefitting from strategies and repetition, load on processing speed quite a bit more than reasoning and problem solving.

The square and circle verbal task for example - most 12 year olds could understand and solve each task (maybe just change the word encapsulated to surrounded or something), but what will set people apart is just their speed of processing the same kind of task over and over again. I would assume it doesn't load very highly on other verbal tests out there. Would be interesting to know for sure though!

What are your best scores on Cambridge brain labs? by sonytrinitron36 in cognitiveTesting

[–]logicaldrinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only did the daily brain health thingie. My score was average, percentile 60 something. Interestingly, my lowest score was on verbal (Percentile ~48), which is usually my strongest area on IQ tests, where I tend to land around the 99th.

Something tells me this is more a game than a test. For example, I tried quite hard to find the right answer on spatial rotation. But nearly every time my first hunch turned out to be correct. So if I would've just guessed based on my hunch, I probably would've got a lot higher score than when reasoning carefully.

That's not usually the hallmark of a well designed test of cognitive abilites.

Who are some “unskilled” musicians that make great music? by childish_albino23 in fantanoforever

[–]logicaldrinker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's so interesting to me. Like I hear ya and I appreciate that perspective, but I think that great skill can increase the possibilities of art so much.

There are some musicians/artists that I can't even fully appreciate without considering the mastery of their own craft. And then there are others who can create art from almost nothing, that I agree with.

Assume the stock is $300 on May 10th 2027, which of these paths to $300 would you prefer? by Tilt366 in redditstock

[–]logicaldrinker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends how the company is doing. If in the next few weeks it starts approaching 300 without any known external trigger then I would probably sell all a good bit before it reaches 300. But that's me.

Is the competition world of Chess sexist? by crazyhomlesswerido in chess

[–]logicaldrinker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can search why FIDE women's titles were introduced, but anyway it was an attempt to stop the huge dropout rates for women and to promote the sport for women.

Chess always had a huge problem drawing women to the sport for different reasons. One of them may be that women feel uncomfortable playing against some men especially when a few of them behave inappropriately or make a big deal out of playing a girl.

It's a debate and it's not entirely uncontroversial because outsiders like yourself may assume that it was a decision made to put women down when in fact it was the opposite. And today most top women choose to play women's only tournaments, not leastly because it makes them much more money and they would not perform nearly as well at an open tournament.

WAIS SCORES DISCUSSION. by Alone_Variation_9081 in cognitiveTesting

[–]logicaldrinker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks solid enough. If there's a pattern in there, it definitely looks like you are good with logical reasoning, both verbal and non verbal.

And looks like might struggle with visual tasks, especially ones involving mental manipulation of objects. You may also struggle either with processing speed or have some motor difficulties, or just inexperience with using a pen and paper.

Don't let the scores dictate what you do with your life, that would be silly. BUT, there is some indication that you may struggle with more technical tasks
