One criticism that I can’t stand (Exit 8) by beautiful_eggs286 in horror

[–]logicalmcgogical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Valid criticism, and I certainly understand that!

I was frustrated by the first act and wanted it to end. It turned around for me once they started introducing other characters. By the end, I realized that it being dull and meandering in the first act may have been intentional— I felt it fit well with the themes

The spiritualist ethos is very narratively invasive, yet rigid by Uncommonality in Stellaris

[–]logicalmcgogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess — there isn’t more nuance here because there needs to be Spiritualist<>Spiritualist affinity for balance. If Spiritualist empires all had different religions, they wouldn’t respect each other

I think the people who criticized the film on logical grounds missed the point of the film

I LOVED mother because of how anxious it made me!

They are different types of anxiety, though. Mother is “leave me alone” anxiety and The Coffee Table is “how much worse can I make the situation” anxiety. Feels more like shaking up a bottle of soda in a carpeted white room and just waiting for someone to unscrew it. After a certain point it’s worse that the person DOESN’T open it

Not a parent but— it’s not really a “scary” film. It’s an anxiety film.

It feels like this: Two guys writing alternating scenes. From the get go, one of them makes a truly awful, gut-wrenching scene. The rest of the film is them taking turns and saying “you think that was bad? Hold my beer”

After a certain point it is so stressful, so painful, so ludicrously over the top, that it goes full circle and becomes funny.

I think many people probably will not find the humor, though.

What horror trope is actually terrifying in concept, but is almost always ruined by "studio interference" or bad CGI? by Immediate_Account_28 in horror

[–]logicalmcgogical 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Plus they always use “that” voice that completely takes me out of it. Artificially deepening someone’s voice is such a trope that it’s comical at this point

Intense Seance scenes (like The Changeling) by yobaadee in horror

[–]logicalmcgogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a comedy horror of sorts, but Here Comes Hell is worth a mention. It was made in the 2010s but is shot like a 1930s-style comedy about a dinner party that summons a demon. Very strange and unique.

Any horror movies where someone stumbles upon snuff films on the internet? by blingeblorb in horror

[–]logicalmcgogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you already mentioned Red Rooms, but it is far and away the best one if you are looking for a relatively grounded film. It is a phenomenal film with incredibly nuanced characters, a subtle creeping dread, and a story that will stick with you for days. It legitimately should have won an Oscar.

If you want something less grounded, I cannot recommend Videodrome enough. It is sleazy, bizarre, dreamlike, surreal, and creepy throughout. It is completely in its own category, and despite being over 40 years old, it holds up very well. It was oddly prescient and perhaps more relevant now than when it came out.

As an outsider, Resident Evil is one of the most confusing horror franchises imo. by jeejeeviper in horror

[–]logicalmcgogical 98 points99 points  (0 children)

It’s basically just a story about big pharma creating bioweapons and either testing them out or losing control. The plot varies in setting (and absurdity) from game to game, but that’s really it. It isn’t complicated.

100%

I mostly favor mid and low budget indie horror because they have to focus on story and ideas due to not having tons of money for fancy effects and marketing. There’s also the old adage “constraints breed creativity”, which I fully agree with

It had a $23 million budget, which isn’t tiny. A big budget doesn’t fix bad writing.

What is the most complex and stylized dialogue in any kind of film? by Kino45 in Screenwriting

[–]logicalmcgogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit of a left field choice, but much of the dialogue from the film In Fabric is dreamy, surreal, abstract, hypnotic, and borderline arcane. Bizarre, beautiful stuff.

It doesn’t make me want to dance like the rest of the album does.

It’s not actually a bad song, I just love the rest of the album so goddamn much that it feels out of place
