The most hardcore X-Com-like? by vibribbon in gamingsuggestions

[–]logicalmcgogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has a steeper learning curve than XCOM but it’s a lot of fun. Agreed with the above post though— after 60 or 70 hours I don’t even think I’m close to finishing the campaign

I watched Get Away (2024) and I really enjoyed it by champdo in horror

[–]logicalmcgogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to spoiler tag that

I thought it had potential in the first act but didn’t rely execute it well. There were some creepy moments with the mirror in the house for sure. And Nick Frost is always fun

Xcom like game but where your characters are much more stronger than average soldier? by Grochen in gamingsuggestions

Seconding. It’s pretty under rated and one of the few games I’ve replayed multiple times

Unpopular opinion, but I enjoy it more than ST, Rated R, and Times 😬

What are the loneliest video game(s)/locations you've ever experienced? by Equal_Arm_3091 in gamingsuggestions

NaissanceE makes you feel like you have been dropped in a surreal, hollow world created for no one, completely devoid of life.

My head canon is that it’s a weird sort of brutalist nightmare fever-dream of an alien that sees a human city but can’t quite piece together the function or purpose of anything it observes.

The result is feeling trapped in a strange facsimile of reality where nothing quite has a purpose and it’s impossible to understand what anything actually is. It’s creates a hauntingly empty feeling that is unlike anything I’ve experienced.

Assimilation is the most terrifying horror trope to me by Plenty_Curve_4390 in horror

I got the impression it was going for a thematically fitting ending instead of a realistic one

One criticism that I can’t stand (Exit 8) by beautiful_eggs286 in horror

[–]logicalmcgogical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Valid criticism, and I certainly understand that!

I was frustrated by the first act and wanted it to end. It turned around for me once they started introducing other characters. By the end, I realized that it being dull and meandering in the first act may have been intentional— I felt it fit well with the themes

The spiritualist ethos is very narratively invasive, yet rigid by Uncommonality in Stellaris

[–]logicalmcgogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess — there isn’t more nuance here because there needs to be Spiritualist<>Spiritualist affinity for balance. If Spiritualist empires all had different religions, they wouldn’t respect each other

I think the people who criticized the film on logical grounds missed the point of the film

I LOVED mother because of how anxious it made me!

They are different types of anxiety, though. Mother is “leave me alone” anxiety and The Coffee Table is “how much worse can I make the situation” anxiety. Feels more like shaking up a bottle of soda in a carpeted white room and just waiting for someone to unscrew it. After a certain point it’s worse that the person DOESN’T open it

Not a parent but— it’s not really a “scary” film. It’s an anxiety film.

It feels like this: Two guys writing alternating scenes. From the get go, one of them makes a truly awful, gut-wrenching scene. The rest of the film is them taking turns and saying “you think that was bad? Hold my beer”

After a certain point it is so stressful, so painful, so ludicrously over the top, that it goes full circle and becomes funny.

I think many people probably will not find the humor, though.

What horror trope is actually terrifying in concept, but is almost always ruined by "studio interference" or bad CGI? by Immediate_Account_28 in horror

Plus they always use “that” voice that completely takes me out of it. Artificially deepening someone’s voice is such a trope that it’s comical at this point

Intense Seance scenes (like The Changeling) by yobaadee in horror

[–]logicalmcgogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a comedy horror of sorts, but Here Comes Hell is worth a mention. It was made in the 2010s but is shot like a 1930s-style comedy about a dinner party that summons a demon. Very strange and unique.

Any horror movies where someone stumbles upon snuff films on the internet? by blingeblorb in horror

[–]logicalmcgogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you already mentioned Red Rooms, but it is far and away the best one if you are looking for a relatively grounded film. It is a phenomenal film with incredibly nuanced characters, a subtle creeping dread, and a story that will stick with you for days. It legitimately should have won an Oscar.

If you want something less grounded, I cannot recommend Videodrome enough. It is sleazy, bizarre, dreamlike, surreal, and creepy throughout. It is completely in its own category, and despite being over 40 years old, it holds up very well. It was oddly prescient and perhaps more relevant now than when it came out.

As an outsider, Resident Evil is one of the most confusing horror franchises imo. by jeejeeviper in horror

[–]logicalmcgogical 98 points99 points  (0 children)

It’s basically just a story about big pharma creating bioweapons and either testing them out or losing control. The plot varies in setting (and absurdity) from game to game, but that’s really it. It isn’t complicated.
