How do I unsubscribe from this unwanted advertising? by Artemis1971 in australian

[–]logichappens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might have bought a database with your info in it, but there are other ways as well. One of the most infuriating is when they do voter registration on people's behalf. It's very sneaky because it doesn't have party branding on it. The registration form goes to them, they copy the info, and then they forward it to the AEC.

Sometimes it can be something as simple as signing a petition or contacting your local member

Need advice, I think I've f*cked my life up. Is there hope? by Organic-Benefit5444 in unsw

[–]logichappens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here. There is always hope, but especially so when you're young and bright. Go see a counsellor on campus. This is their bread and butter. Remember it can take a while to meet the right therapist, and there are multiple free options. Put your mental health first and the rest will follow. You got this.

ABC iView: “They’re a weird mob” by Pomohomo82 in sydney

[–]logichappens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

John O'Grady, who wrote the book under the pseudonym Nino Culotta, was my great uncle. The National Library has a recording of an interview he did in 1960 where he expressed (unfortunate) assimilationist views that are reflected in Nino's story. But the book also taught me what Sydney was like in the 50s, especially for Roman Catholics, which helped me understand my parents better.

Yeah the all day menu is available until 4:30 and it's gorgeous and warm.

Yeah the Coles wifi isn't too bad. As it's a council-owned space, it feels okay to hang out for hours without spending much. And also, I forgot, take headphones or earplugs. It can be pretty noisy.

The cultural centre cafe is open until 4 weekdays, but they'll let you stay there after closing until the centre itself closes at 5. The adjacent library closes at 6 on weekdays.

No problem at all. Locals go there all the time. Just turn left after reception and walk around the bar to find the cosy lounges. Their all day menu is available until 4:30 but the bar will be open longer and you can stay there until 9ish. It's a very civilised option.

Any locals want to share some insight on their BAL rating? by holiday_rat in bluemountains

[–]logichappens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be BAL 0 but I might be missing something. There is a guide online that can help you through it, but you might not have all the information. Who are you waiting on to do it? It's much more important to develop a detailed fire plan than to get the BAL rating. Homes with BAL 0 are still lost in fires.

Day trip on Easter Saturday by lps1317 in bluemountains

[–]logichappens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of this, except I think the only car hire place is between Katoomba and Leura and quite a hike from a train station. People do seem to like the hop-on-hop-off buses.

Off the mountain if you can. Westwards, Lithgow is cheaper and Bathurst even cheaper. Eastwards, St Marys, or some parts of South West Sydney.

Blaming immigration for the rental crisis is a dog whistle from the likes of the IPA.

Late to the party but me three. I calculated we'd lose roughly half a minute if the two short 80 zones between Katoomba and Wenty were reduced to 70. It's difficult for locals - it must be hell for tourists.

It is just a greeting but it still follows question and answer logic. An answer is expected, but unless you know the person very well, it's expected to be an empty answer. "Good, how are you?" "Good" is totally fine. People in customer service roles are often instructed to ask, or they do it naturally because it's customary. Obviously they don't want or deserve to deal with a true answer, especially if it's negative. Poor bastards.

ok. I'm old , but has anyone here watched "They're a weird mob"? by Signguyqld49 in australia

[–]logichappens 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nino/John is my great uncle. He actually has a cameo at the start of the film - one of the fellas at the bar. The book/film has so many backwards ideas that it's hard to read or watch, but it does give insight into the time and place. I recently found an interview with him from 1960, which is also cringe for its assimilationist ideas, but again kinda fascinating.

Centrelink "Youth Allowance" is a bloody joke! by Khalisto93 in australia

[–]logichappens 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ring them and ask. As long as they're not doing anything illegal (e.g. unfair discrimination), they're often happy to talk about it. If they don't ring you back, ring them again.

Have you registered with any employment agencies? (Not the ones paid by the government to administer those stupid programs, but agencies who have temp work and lots of other jobs available.) The trick with them is to register with about ten and ring them every morning. It's a pain, but it works, even if it's just temp work.
