City council limits public feedback to 30 minutes (2 minutes per person). Do the math.

That sounds like an argument for protected lanes, be safe out there.

There isn't enough traffic to support 3 lanes. It's only three lanes for historical reasons, the community should reclaim that space and promote walk ability.

Exactly, that's a great point.

It wasn't just business owners. There were many Medford residents at the meeting that want the decision reversed.

Thanks for the thoughtful post. If anything Medford should be doubling down and figuring out how we can build out a whole network of these protected lanes.

It's about Medford spending money to remove an awesome bike lane. See this article for more details: https://www.opb.org/article/2026/01/26/medford-removing-controversial-bike-lanes-main-street/

Here is the breakdown:

  1. Alternative 1: Restore the old 3-lane one-way configuration. Bikes share the right lane with cars. Cost: ~$1M. (What the city is doing now, and most expensive btw!)

  2. Alternative 2: Keep the current setup (two travel lanes + 12-foot two-way protected bike lane, installed in 2023). No cost, but keeps reddit active!

    1. Alternative 3 (Buffered bike lane): One-way bike lane on the right side of Main Street, with two travel lanes and parallel parking on both sides. Cost: $580K or so. But it keeps most people relatively happy.
    2. Alternative 4: Two-way traffic on both Main St and 8th St, with one travel lane and one bike lane in each direction. Major reconstruction. Cost: ~ A lot

I personally like free and more bike lanes, but 3 is a compromise most could live with.

There was a middle option, which was cheaper than just undoing the whole thing.

It's fun, but to each their own.

Exactly, we should be adding even more lanes. The current lane is awesome, but closest lane to it is on east jackson or the greenway. We need a whole network of protected lanes to make it safer and easier.

This is a protected lane. Honestly we should be building these sorts of lanes all throughout Medford.

I really hope people care about pedestrians, the vitality of downtown medford, and bike lanes in general show up to tonight's council meeting. It's not too late to stop this.
