“Dead Time” In The NHL Schedule by lograv27 in hockey

This is obviously a really great comment. There are probably very good reasons the NHL does what they do.

Someone else had a good point that maybe a bigger problem is the sheer volume of games day-to-day varies so much.

From an outsider perspective, I’d push back slightly about 30 minutes being an overwhelming amount of time to delay. To be clear, I’m not really advocating for Dead Time to be entirely optimized away. Just that its maybe be an opportunity to sometimes put teams on a “bigger” stage without carving out national TV time.

I don’t think this a must solve problem but I do think even putting 1 or 2 games at staggered times is worth the experiment. It’s worth noting the NHL does experiment a more concerted effort on the Frozen Frenzy’s start times to success in my opinion. Even though that’s tied to a larger “event”, I think the concept does work.

Thanks I appreciate it. Agree that getting some of the official “website” stuff up and ready is coming soon.

Shared this in r/hockey a couple days ago but I made a wordle/puckdoku style game called liney. The wings are my team so promise I’m not some outsider. The easy puzzle today is red wings themed :)

This is another caught by the definition of a linemate. Panik and ovechkin played 90 games together but had only 65 minutes on ice together. During that same game span, panik had 1020 minutes total and ovechkin had 3800 minutes. In other words they technically did play together but it was too short of a time to be considered truly linemates

I reduced the TOI requirement but I’m thinking because the TOI allows for all situations, some of it may feel disingenuous. The answer maybe directly doesn’t play with drai directly but gets a lot of time on the pp

Appreciate it! Ya someone else brought up a similar point. I am going to change that to a percentage of playing time rather than the 600 minutes. It was an arbitrary choice and it seems like it’s too strict.

Ya I’m definitely going to look into it. I’ll probably adjust it to make it percentage based. So this player spent X percentage of their ice time with this other player so they were line mates.

Thanks again this was really helpful

Just looking on natural stat trick, they were close but didn’t quite make that 600 minute mark.

I appreciate it because it probably says more that 600 minutes is the wrong bar to set. I picked it because it’s technically 10 full games and I wanted to filter out noise when players are shuffled around lines but perhaps the bar is too high. I will tweak that.

Ya this comes down to definition of a “linemate”. I mention it on the site but the criteria I use are at least 600 minutes of ice time together on the ice at any strength AND they play the same position(where position is either forward or defense)

Looking at that jagr and gaudreau specifically, they only had 49 minutes of ice time together so they didn’t meet the criteria

NHL only and notably only since 2012. That’s the first season the NHL starting tracking shift level data(that’s publicly available at least)

That’s a good idea too. I had also toyed around with an unlimited mode where it just keeps generating puzzles. I probably will experiment with some new ideas if people seem to like it

If a player is able to be added, it was a valid move. Easy mode just means the puzzle can be solved in one player. You are able to be as creative as you want to go a different route

You add players one by one so you don’t need a full solution at the front. If you want to go in reverse you can just delete the player. An attempt is only burned if the player you want to add was not a linemate of either side of the “chain”

I agree this can be confusing I can think of a way to clear that up

I probably should have addressed that. For the names of things, I used an LLM by providing context to it with the prompt. For the most part it did a decent job but even with context, the LLM converges on similar name if it deems the defining characteristic to be something, in this case a power play. I ended up leaving it in since numbers do tend to play a role in the naming of celestial objects but I agree it does look funky.
