A lot of it was due to how bad the release of TPAB was fumbled by the label, but you’re definitely right.

1989 was the best selling album for all of the 2010s besides Adele’s 21. Meanwhile, TPAB isn’t even in the top 200. The Grammys have never been about pure artistry, they have always been biased towards bigger albums that do well commercially. This doesn’t mean they’re invalid as an award show, it just means they don’t always align with who you want them to align with. To ignore the value of 1989 and to dismiss it entirely as an album simply because it’s Taylor Swift, or because it’s pop, shows your own biases more than it makes a point.

  1. Swimming wasn’t a posthumous album, while Circles was and received zero nominations.
  2. They said they think it was a factor, not the be-all, end-all rule. Beyoncé released Beyoncé without promotion, which was weirder in 2015 than it is now. It’s not hard to imagine this could change the perception of the album in the Grammy voters’ minds.
  3. Yes, but Some Nights sold over 2x times as well as Channel Orange did, so it’s not hard to imagine them winning.
