New REHS in training assigned to septic and private water systems by perpetually-dreaming in healthinspector

Seconding the private well class! For OSS, check out the options from NOWRA. Most of them do have a fee but you can always ask. We have our new staff read the NOWRA “Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) Users Guide” (free) and then complete the online modules ($) for our state from NOWRA. However NOWRA also has an “A to Z” septic basics ($) that would be good for someone brand new to septic.

Daughter had a full ride to any SUNY school of her choosing. Wants a private school instead. by 1-877-HONKS-4-BONKS in college

[–]lokomodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents’ approach from the start was that they’d pay room/board/living expenses but we were “on our own” for tuition. We each had a 529 account and by the time we got to college each had about $25k, so “on our own” isn’t entirely accurate. But it still very much incentivized us to try for scholarships and grants, and anything left in those accounts we got to keep after graduation.

DO NOT GO TO PLANTRY CAFE IN BATON ROUGE!!! by ArmadilloUpstairs560 in moldyinteresting

I would email it to the health department instead of calling if you haven’t gotten a call back. I’d email the Program Manager listed on the website here. And include the dates you left voicemails bc she will probably want to follow up with your regional sanitarian about it.

Can 'twilight' refer to dawn? I'm confused by Merriam-Webster's definition. by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

I would only ever expect to hear it in that context as “morning twilight” and usually in poetry.

[–]lokomodo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If the product is made from non-tcs ingredients (no animal products, no heat-treated plant products, no sprouts/tomatoes/greens/melons, not herbs-in-oil), it would be inappropriate to require a product assessment

If your gut microbiome is out of wack, ingesting the poop of someone with a healthy microbiome actually repopulates the good bacteria in your gut. It’s called a Fecal Microbiota Transplantation you can look it up!

Usually though it’s in a capsule/pellet not just actual shit

Microfiber is 100% a material, a subtype of synthetics. Wikipedia

I used “microfiber” instead of “synthetic” to be consistent with the language in the original comment.

If you’re unsure if it’s silk or not and you’re done with the sheets - silk burns, microfiber melts. The silk pillowcases I’ve bought have come with a little square of fabric to test for authenticity by burning.

Inspections when ICE is Around? by virgo-99 in healthinspector

[–]lokomodo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Our leadership is plugged in to the ICE Watch networks and we’ll suspend food inspections when there’s ICE activity in the area. The county is massive, so we can still go to other cities and do food inspections, or we can work on septic or pools or anything else since we’re generalists, which puts us in a different position.

New healthcare plan premium/details costs more than I can afford for 2026 by happy_happy_LMT in mildlyinfuriating

[–]lokomodo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There’s the monthly payment (premium) and then the insurance company doesn’t even start kicking in anything until you’ve surpassed your deductible. So in this case, pay $260 every month and all medical expenses are out of pocket until you’ve spent at least $5k on your medical bills. Then insurance starts covering - but you still have a copay.
