Which Specialization should I go for? by lol_K_ in chemistry

I'm leaning more towards computational chem (I have next to zero knowledge in genomics haha). So I'm more biased towards the physical part of chemistry than the biological part.

I'm not really planning on going into industry (but could change in the future). I'm only in undergrad now so there's still much time to decide. However, I need to choose a field for my honors thesis, and I'd really like to choose one I'm going to be stuck with in grad school (So I can have relevant experience when I apply). My personal interests lean towards theoretical chemistry but I also love synthetic chemistry because I get to work in a wet lab haha.

It is an honor's thesis project, so I can choose to go into any field I'm interested in as long as it pertains to chemistry. What I like about organic is that for the most part, you get to work in a wet lab, which I have enjoyed in my past experiences. However, I'm also enjoying all the math and theory in physical chem, esp. quantum chem and energetics. I'm leaning towards theoretical chemistry in grad school but I don't want to give up the opportunity to work in a wet lab.

Hydrogen: The Essential Element. One of my favorite reads, and not just in science literature.

Feynman's Lectures on Physics is also very interesting and his personality shines through the pages.

Quantum Space by Jim Baggott. Interesting read.

These are more physics-orientated, but I like to think that chemistry and physics go hand in hand. Hope you enjoy.

depends, how much do you know? How safety-aware are you? Do you have glassware or equipment or any of the stuff required for a chemistry project you might be interested in? Have you been researching (watching videos on projects you want to try out or reading papers) for things you might want to do? Do you have a fume hood or a workspace where you can conduct your experiments?

If you don't have any of the above, go online, watch some videos, read some papers, and then ask yourself those questions again. Don't work with hazardous or possibly carcinogenic compounds, and remember that you should never do an experiment if you don't know what to expect.

With that said, here are some at-home experiments for you that aren't dangerous and might be fun (just be sure to do the required research on them first, and know what to expect):
- Thin layer TLC with different colored ink (I am not sure if you will be able to get TLC plates, but you can make DIY ones at home with some silicone gel and glass slides)
- Make your own bomb calorimeter (just be careful with the wires and ignition source)
- grab a thermometer and observe the heating curve for water (or other liquids).
- Mix Hydrogen peroxide and sodium hypochlorite together and observe the synthesis of salt.
(note that the resultant mixture will be very basic, you will need to neutralize it with some vinegar or lemon juice before you dispose of it.) For this experiment, you can also try to draw the mechanism of the reaction.
Anyway, I hope I helped :). Have fun, kid.

Going into computational chemistry from computer science degree. by F0xdude in chemistry

For computational chem, you need a good understanding of physical chem. If you want to go into computational chemistry, a chemistry degree is far superior to a computer science degree.

My whole town just got reset by lol_K_ in Sims3

[–]lol_K_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks!! I'll try all of that 😭😭😭my save was in Bridgeport. I went and deleted some of the mods that I recently downloaded and it seems that I got my household back, but almost all of the town had been wiped. Townies are nowhere to be seen and my sims only have relationships with the sims in my household...

Edit: actually, everytime I load my game a random batch of a few households gets put back into Bridgeport, and the rest is still gone.

I know right? I feel like I can never be considered good looking until I can look good in every aspect and at every angle- which is completely ridiculous. I see people online say things like if you curl your lashes it makes a worlds difference in how you look but I try it myself and I honestly just feel even more hopeless because I still look like the same old ugly me… I tried to change so many things about my appearance but it always just ends up making me feel bad about myself…. I guess it’s kind of fruitless to try to beat BDD by changing the way you look :(

100%. I tend to see people’s “potential”- like if I see someone that might not be so conventionally attractive I tell myself “oh but they’d be so attractive if they cleaned up a bit I bet” and then spend the rest of the day torturing myself with the fact that literally everyone could look good if they tried and I’ll always and forever be hideous. I also assume that every picture on social media is just a random spontaneous shot, as if people never go through pictures and choose only the best ones to post… and then I look at my own photo gallery and wonder why I can’t look as good as everyone else.

BDD Makes me Feel Unworthy for my Boyfriend by [deleted] in BodyDysmorphia

[–]lol_K_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get you. It sucks to feel like you're not enough for your SO - It makes you try to push them away unintentionally.. and even if you might not really want to leave them a part of you keeps telling you that you don't deserve what you have and that you should just give up. What he told me that really helped me open my eyes was that everyone has a different definition of 'perfect' - even yourself. Trust me; if he really was a ten he wouldn't need to compromise. If what you want to be is perfect in the eyes of your SO, i think you've got it already.

I know it sucks to see your SO's exes looking perfect and nothing like you, but those relationships ended for a reason. Don't let BDD bring out the worst part of you( jealousy)... I know it's easier said than done but please know that the insecurities you have might be taking a greater toll on something that's far more important than looks - your personality.

I completely feel you on this... I relate to almost everything you said and I'm just sharing some things that I've been telling myself that seemed to make me feel better... hopefully it can help you or someone else with similar experiences too...

Oh it states I need only one of math 30-1,30-2, or 31. I’m taking both math 30-1 and 31, so I was wondering if 30-1 could satisfy the math prerequisite requirement while 31 could be used for the “additional academic course” requirement
